London Saturday April 2nd 2022 - 20 years!!

Postby Diamond Dog » 15 Dec 2021, 20:54

April 2nd (or the corresponding weekend) was where those 16 of us met up in London 20 damn years ago!

So - that's the date for next April.

Come along. Join in. Drink. Talk bollocks.

Rorsch PM'd me about this. I thought it was Jan/Feb. I'm up for this. same venue? Hopefully the COVIID restrictions allow relative normal travel between the US and the UK. All going well I'm up for it. 16, you say? Teabag, Rorch, Piledriver, Slider, Baba, Chief, you, me... who else?? Who's left?
Gotta be done at the same place! I'm pretty excited.

No it won't be the same place Muddy - The Moon Under Water changed hands etc. Not sure it's even a pub anymore.

It's going to be at The Blue Posts, Newman St (just off of Oxford Street). Just down the road from where our very first meet was.

It would be LOVELY to see as many of us there wo met up that crazy days 20 years back.... plus everyone else,of course!

Further to the above... it's now called The Montagu Pike..... a Wetherspoons......

So why not the original venue then ? Seems more appropriate and gets my vote. I'm anticipating being shot down, but why the Blue Posts loyalty. Obviously the original atrraction was the room hire (no longer available), dirt cheap prices (no longer available though granted cheaper than many) which leaves the remaining advantage of location.

The major downside for me is beer quality, pretty fundamental one would imagine for a pub, but with only one hand pumped option, they fail to keep that properly. Seems worse every time I visit and last time was just borederline drinkable. I know this isn't an issue for all the fizzy piss/alcopop quaffers, but can't believe I'm alone in this.

I will not enter a Wetherspoons
But I will happily consider a suitable alternative if you can find one

I have to say, I'm with John re Wetherspoons. The owner can go fuck himself.

As regarding alternative venues - I'm open to any sensible suggestion.

But the bitter I had earlier this month there was absolutely fine - maybe they're taking more care of it these days?

Agreed on the Wetherspoons front and, as I'll be drinking halves of lager, I don't care about the beer.
Anywhere's fine for me. It's all about the people rather than the location.

Just thought it would be nice for sentimental reasons, and of course I didn't know it being Wetherspoon pub and what the issue is with that. So I looked it up. The owner is a strong Brexit supporter, was/is against COVID measures and ill-treated his staff during the lockdown. So he's a cunt and I agree we don't go there. Looks tacky as well.

It is also a huge barn of a room, Erik
Noisy and crowded and full of the sort of people who *do* drink in Wetherspoons pubs

I love the place and would pick it above any of the other laces we've jollied, but it gets packed and the back room is a full time restaurant now so its a non starter

Just want to throw this out there: for some reason I thought the first get-together was much earlier in the year because I remember it being very cold. But, of course, with me living in Singapore it just felt cold to me. So it probably wasn't really as cold as I remember. I don't know if this is a good idea, but I read somewhere there's some sort of virus going round and it may be quite contagious, especially indoors. Is there such a thing as a beer garden (or Icehouse, as we often call them in Houston) in your preferred area where we can mostly be outdoors? Maybe the landlord can provide blankets for the old folks. I personally would be more comfortable in a predominantly outdoor setting.

there are tables outside the Blue Posts
But in April it may prove a foolhardy man who ventures out to use them
If it is any help, we had a jolly up three weeks ago and no one present caught any viruses there.
There is a much lower incidence of anti-vax amongst us than there is amongst Texans.

Very nice. Thanks for that John! Really looking forward to this. I take your word for it as far as the virus is concerned. It's true: only 58% of the people living in Texas have been fully vaccinated/boosterized and I'm one of them. Just hope that come April it will be easier to travel.
