1. Magical Mystery Tour (Beatles) - 8
2. More (Schroeder) - 8
3. Shadows (Cassavetes) - 8
4. High and Low (Kurosawa) - 8
5. 2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick) - 7

6. The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (Cassavetes) - 7
7. Tommy (Russell) - 5
8. Zabriskie Point (Antonioni) - 5
9. Playtime (Tati) - 5
10. Chinatown (Polanski) - 5

11. The Graduate (Nichols) - 5
12. This Is Spinal Tap (Reiner) - 4
13. Z (Costa Gavras) - 4
14. Bande à part/Band of Outsiders (Godard) - 4
15. Performance (Roeg/Cammell) - 4

16. The Passenger (Antonioni) - 3
17. Network (Lumet) - 3
18. Withnail and I (Robinson) - 3
19. Ishtar (May) - 2
20. Until the End of the World (Wenders) - 2

I chose these totally subjectively. Because of that, there are a couple that were sort of iffy that I'm not sure I would include today, two weeks later, changeable man that I am, notably The Passenger and Until the End of the World. Interesting that they're kind of similar, with a guy going to the end of the earth for various reasons. The Passenger is a very engrossing movie, but I think there are things I like better than it that didn't make the top 20. Until the End of the World I haven't seen in so long, I'm not sure I would like it the same way I did. The others I'm pretty solid on, I think. Including Ishtar!

I forgot about The Passenger!
That was just reissued, wasn't it?
I saw it on a VERY dodgy copy. Had it been fresh in my mind, it probably would've made my list.

Not so much Antonioni over all, eh?

A couple of us had Blow-Up on our lists but he seems to have fallen out of favor. Another one who doesn't seem as popular as he used to be is Federico Fellini.

Godard's Le Mepris/Contempt took a hit this year, if I recall correctly.

1. Vertigo
2. Performance
3. Night Of The Hunter
4. The Third Man
5. Casablanca
6. Goodfellas
7. Blue Velvet
8. Taxi Driver
9. Five Easy Pieces
10. The Bicycle Thieves
11. The Conformist
12. The Lives Of Others
13. Rocco And His Brothers
14. Body And Soul
15. City Of God
16. Badlands
17. Brighton Rock
18. Diva

Yes, with a commentary track by Jack Nicholson of all people. Apparently, he just doesn't do those things, which gives you an idea of the high esteem he holds Antonioni and this picture in. (This is what I was told. I have not checked to see if Nicholson has done other commentary tracks.) I haven't heard the whole thing yet, but he seems still very impressed with Antonioni and what he was doing here.

This would make my top 40. As might City of God, come to think of it.

I thought about including it, but something stopped me in the end. The first time I saw it, I was largely just enamored of Bardot and the cinematography ... and that house! On later viewings, I saw the deeper level of what was happening to the couple and the subtle ways things just got worse and worse, just by the words used or small choices made, and I tried to internalize some of the ideas. More recently -- about the time I bought the Criterion 2-disc version, ironically -- I started to feel I didn't need to see it any more as it no longer resonated in the same way.

I have mixed feelings about the film, I think Nicholson is extraordinary!

I think I might be the only one besides penk who hasn't seen 'The Third Man'. Lots of people have recommended it but I still haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

Very good, not great, I'd say. In its less dynamic and more 'dramatic' moments, I don't think it's any better than anything else produced around the same time - some of the dialogue-y scenes are off-puttingly dated.

Of the ones posted so far that's the list I would most like if I didn't have my own (or if I had thought about mine a bit more rather than doing it off the top of my head).

Once Upon A time In America 10
Eraserhead 10
Brazil 5
The Manchurian Candidate 5 (Original version)
Cinema Paradiso 5
Death Watch 5 (Tavernier AKA la Mort en direct)
Walkabout 5
Goodfellas 5
Mean Streets 5
Fitzcarraldo 5
One From The Heart 4
Ghost World 4
Dr Strangelove 4
Get Carter 4
Twelve Monkeys 4
Diva 4
Don’t Look Now 4
The Godfather 4
Casino 4
Blade Runner 4

This was a bit rushed, but looking now I stand by most of this. Maybe Ghost World is a bit "slight" in such weighty company but I do like it. I should have made room for Blue Velvet. Odd that I seem a bit out of synch going for Eraserhead over BV and Fitzcarraldo over Aguirre.
We're way past rhubarb
