Pete the Pick hasn't half seen some shite in his time....
Right, I've decided to legitimise my semi-legendary book of gigs. I'm going to attempt to post stuff attended on their anniversary, so this should last for the next year. Today is the 9th May, so...
1976
Unicorn
Nils Lofgren
The New Victoria Theatre
1977
Buzzcocks
The Jam
The Clash
The Rainbow, Finsbury Park
1988
Was Not Was
The Town & Country Club, Kentish Town
The Nils Lofgren was a cracker, coming soon after his eponymous album, Keith Don't Go etc. I was getting into him, along with Graham Parker and Dr. Feelgood at that time, as part of my revisionist preference to short songs and stuff, after all those years of long noodling performances.
Nils...
The Clash gig was the notorious Rainbow one where the seats from the first few rows were uprooted and chucked onto the stage, much to the approval of Joe and his chums.

10th May:
1981
Guide 84
Auntie Pus
The King's Head, Acton
Guide 84 was an occasional foray into the world of bass guitar by old chum Ed Case, drummer with Hazel O'Connor, and also with 999 after Pablo Labritaine injured his hand in a car accident, or something. Saw him a few years back, and he's performing in musicals up the West End, or some such. Little Nick Calloway who used to play in my band, The Form, was on lead.
Auntie Pus was a friend of Arturo from the Lurkers, real name Julian, who did actually get a single out, that, needless to say, didn't trouble the charts! "Halfway to Venezuela" it was, on Septic Records, and featured Rat Scabies on drums.
The only known image of Auntie Pus....

Imagine, if you'd changed the 'o' to an 'i', Jimmy Page would've had to come up with a whole different name for his post-zep excursions!
You could have changed history, man!
Them's the breaks, my friend!

1972
The Edgar Broughton Band
BBC Paris Studio, Lower Regent's Street
1977
The Models
Chelsea
The Winning Post, Whitton
The Models, of course, were Marco Pirroni's pre-Adam Ant venture. This was an amusing gig, quite apart from the fact it was an early punk excursion into the suburbs near where I lived. This is residential Twickenham! The resident DJ was a local pillock called Alan Goff, who believed in himself rather too much, and had absolutely no sense of what was going on at that time, but I'm getting ahead of myself: refer to Jan 24th, and The Stranglers at Tolworth. Anyway, the point was, Chelsea's PA gave out, and they ended up using the prat DJ's PA instead. Rather bizarre effect, with all the visual action straight ahead, and a reduced aural battering coming at you from the right!

Spotted these on May 13th
1978
Whirlwind
Ian Dury & The Blockheads
Hammersmith Odeon
As if you couldn't tell, this was Dury in his pomp. And what pomp it was! This was the first time I'd seen him, as I missed the Bunch of Stiffs tour previously. Fine gig from a great man. I think Whirlwind were a bunch of rockabilly merchants: can't say I took much notice, actually.
A diamond geezer....

1975
The Otis Waygood Band
The Greyhound, Fulham
1977
The Lurkers
48 Hours
The Red Cow, Hammersmith
1982
The Blasters
Nick Lowe's Noise To Go
Brunel University
In 1975, I was frequenting a lot of pubs that put bands on in west London. I remember nothing of Otis Waygood, but The Greyhound then was still a curious internal construction that made it especially difficult to see the band unless you were at the ground level. Which I rarely seemed to be, always opting for the "balcony" view.
The Red Cow, now that was much better. Smaller and more intimate, just what you wanted to be when The Lurkers were on stage. Oh, and it served Fuller's ales, which is always a plus. A punter named Billy Bollocks probably dived off the stage into the audience. He did most nights when they were on. Two weeks after this, I saw 48 Hours again, only now, as if by magic, they were 999.
The Nick Lowe line-up included Paul Carrack, and it was especially good to hear "Tempted" by this lot.

Oooh. Any other Carrack treats? I Need You from Suburban Voodoo, maybe? Ace's How Long?
Not that I recall. Let's face it, there's plenty good Nick Lowe material to be going on with. I rather felt Tempted was a concession, though very welcome.
May 15th
1980
KHz
The Wooden Bridge, Guildford
1983
The Rescue
Simple Minds
The Ritz, New York
KHz were my ex-bassist's band, who we hooked up with a number of times whenever either of us got a gig for our respective outfits.
The Simple Minds one was excellent. Richly derided for the most part these days, this was in fact them at their peak, I reckon. I remember before the support band came on, a video of Bauhaus doing Bela Lugosi's Dad, sorry, Dead, from The Hunger was shown.
A sweaty Sweaty....

True. My introduction to Nick Lowe was Rockpile backing up Elvis Costello on the This Year's Model tour. Lowe came through town 2 years ago for the Calgary Folk Festival & played an amazing solo acoustic set that was too damn short.

1974
Lindisfarne
Bad Company
Lou Reed
Humble Pie
Maggie Bell
The Who
The Valley, Charlton Athletic FC
1982
Idle Flowers
Mad Shadows
The Greyhound, Fulham
1983
The Neats
Folk City, New York City
1993
Blank Generation
Severe
The Granby Tavern, Reading
Told you it was a good week in 1974. This was the hot one, when H, ladyfriend of mine, fainted 'cos of the temperatures. The Who were rocktastic, mate. Lou Reed sported his bleached look, if I remember rightly, and Maggie was, well, Maggie.
...including that bleached look...
The Neats were Jaimie from Noo Joisey's brother's band. I'd hooked up with her and Pam when I went visiting New York: Sledgey had met them the year before in Greece. Most memorable about this night, apart from having my first ever encounter with Tequila Shots was the fact that at Folk City, the DJ played Vic Godard's "Stop That Girl".

The Traffic gig was a year after the live album, "On The Road" came out, so the material was more or less that....
