Re: PC 21- Tiebreak
Both have some nice moments and are longer than ideal, but A goes more places.

I like my BBD short and sharp, this is way too long.
I was expecting B to have more folk gubbins in it, to my surprise its fairly restrained on that front.

Re: PC 21- Tiebreak
I'm surprised that I was underwhelmed by the Be Bop Deluxe track. Perhaps the version from the studio album might have been better.
There'll be complaints in some quarters about Finnish prog folk from the 21st century. The band seemed to warm to their task, after a dull sounding start to the track, it completely livened up by the end and was quite enjoyable.

Good match.
Vocals on A were a bit of a drawback - never heard of Scarlet Thread but I enjoyed that.

Re: PC 21- Tiebreak
I always feel that I should like and enjoy BBD more than I actually do.
Despite having a couple of their albums I am not really au fait with their music. I probably only played them a couple of times each. I assume this is a suite of tracks which starts with Modern Music and closes with the reprise....
So I am not sure how different this is from the studio version.
I did enjoy it though. Nice guitar. Nice tubs.
Yes nice. Very nice. It gets better and better as the suite develops.
I need to delve into the albums I have a bit more
Then onto Scarlet Thread which I know nothing about
The film comes to mind and I recall Dora Bryan being in it [her of Last of the Summer Wine and dinnerladies amongst umpteen other TV and film stuff].
I liked her.
Anyway, the band.
They sounded like a rip-off of East Eden but I won't hold that against them - it was very robust and full of music.
In fact brimming, nay, overflowing with music
Very nice. It just shows - some derivative stuff is not claptrap. A rarity
A very strong match - two excellent choices worthy of a tie-breaker.
This is very tight - I am going to have to play Scarlet Thread again...
I'll be back!

Very very very very close!

Re: PC 21- Tiebreak
Great tie!
As much as I like his guitar tone and his compositions, it's a pity that Bill Nelson has such an un-sexy voice.
I didn't mind it much back in the day, but it's become a deal-breaker for me.
I'll vote for the unfamiliar (and instrumental ) B, which is everything I've grown to love recently: folkish with fiddles and flutes and twisted, inventive arrangements.

Re: PC 21- Tiebreak
i love both tracks. it seems to keep happining to me... which, frankly, is a good problem to have. mwhaha.
i'm gonna go with A over B. as close as it is, B really hit me as kickass/arse early on, and thennn it got kinda repetitive. i mean, it was still groovy, but i just expected more to happen. while A did go to other places.
i truly loved em both, tho. end of.

Re: PC 21- Tiebreak
Difficult.
I love Be Bop Deluxe. But the looseness of this version does them few favours. Scarlet Thread are OK, pleasant enough but dull.
I can't help feeling both contestants have lead with their respective chins here, given the significance of the round. Virtually any vintage Yes, Genesis, even ELP track would have gazumped either of these pale offerings.
*sigh*

I liked Scarlet Thread's stripped down, unpretentious aesthetic. I'll bet they would be a great to see performing live.

Re: PC 21- Tiebreak
A- I'm always underwhelmed by BBD. I like each of its parts, drums, guitar, keyboards, vocals all good. But the sum of its parts together leaves me missing something with some balls.
B- never heard of them. I liked the guitar and drum intro. The groove kept up and sort of a marching army beat. Then warms into a nice folk setting with flutes. Before ending in an all out jam. nicely done.

Well put kath. That's exactly the same for me.
I still can't decide though.
It's a very big decision at such a critical point....
I'm still relistening....

A. We are pushing the prog boundaries again here. Unsure why it’s a live version, as it shows up Bill’s less than fabulous voice and highlights Charlie’s slightly off backing vocals. The original version might have got my vote.
B. Quite interesting, without being a world changer.
Frankly, both of you should have chosen better!

Sometimes studio versions you want just aren't on YT.

Yep. In this case I’d have chosen something else.

You're probably right given the result. I did want the studio version but couldn't find one and the live version sounded fine to me so went with it, and felt my other short listed choices were guaranteed vote losers
