Ian Carr - what a trumpeter!

A corker of a track from what I reckon was Nucleus' best album.

An incredible track written by the man who later joined The Softs - Karl Jenkins (a little nod to Bundles in there too)

The great John Marshall on tubs and Chris Spedding on guitar

Wonderful!!!

Split Enz have never been my cup of darjeeling and this selection is no exception.

Sorry, my loss but I just don't get them

i only know a few big hits fom split enz (i love those tracks), but this is a split enz i've never heard before, mwhaha. a lil crazy and fun, a freaky kinda brroadway feel. i liiiiike it.

but alas, it can't beat the outright jammmm of B.

love the match-up, though.

Initially I thought A was going to be much too music hall for me but I actually enjoyed it more than I expected and it had a touch of 10CC about it (Une Nuit a Paris kind of thing).

I like trumpets, I like them in jazz and I like a good funky jazz groove, and B has them all.

I'd be interested in hearing both the albums these two tracks came from. Good match but B sneaks it

A is good quirky fun, B has lots of oomph, is full of music, etc. Both attend the broad church.

Tough call but B wins by virtue of having the added attraction of the gweetar.

I sound like such a goon, don't I?

Very tough call.

Had little idea what to expect from Split Enz, and thoroughly enjoyed the track. I've read up a bit on the album it came from, appears to be a bit of a hodge podge with this one of the few outstanding tracks, but I will investigate them further.

The Nucleus song is a great piece and one that gives me a smidgen more enjoyment than the Enz.

Apologies to A, it's B

A - goes to prove Rick Wakeman's point that every band has a little bit of prog in them. They had my vote for the spoons solo alone. This track is not dissimilar to something you might hear on a Stackridge album.

Nucleus, derivative of Miles Davis and Soft Machine? A fine track, but not today thanks ....

Didn't like A and was ready to switch off but let it rum and was actually enjoying it towards the end. B is classic British Jazz Fusion on the vertigo swirl and a corker of a track.

B

is just great.

Split Enz got off to a rocky start to their career, feeling that album was poorly produced, and re-recording the songs and some discards for their next album, produced by Phil Manzanera, which is how I know this. Not a can of worms I have ever opened.

The Woman Who Loves You was included on the re recorded Mental Notes (called Second Thoughts in NZ, the original sounds just fine to me as it was) having been recorded but left left off the original album , it was a live staple and highlight for many years and included the show stopping spoons solo from Noel Crombie not to mention the masterful piano from Eddie Rayner, back when the band still had the bizarre hair cuts and amazing Crombie designed suits. An absolute live tour de force from one of the very best live bands in the world at the time. You should take a listen LMG, no worms to be found, but a ton of great music I assure you !

a - better than most split enzs and I like them a bit.

B - confused who the musicians are this sounds like soft machine bundles. But who is playing guitar that isn’t Holdsworth right? Is it etheridge? I get who the other three are.

B

Ps : at my music composer house he said you kidding me B

I really like the Enz' vaudeville years, hadn't heard this for ages.

Nucleus is okayish British fusion with some nice guitar by Chris Spedding, but not much more

Edit: Third listen... A is fucking brilliant!!
