Interesting I was just digging into 'later' Hawkwind in the synch listen today, and really liked what I heard. This is similarly direct and enamored of the 'sounds of the day' while still retaining the essence of Hawkwindiness, but the loss of Calvert is really felt, and Ginger Baker is a very odd fit for the drum chair (where he sure enough wouldn't last very long). Nice raw groove, but nothing else to really grab onto.

Fortunately B is suitably wacky and wooly enough to deserve my vote - I love 70s Brazilian weirdness, and this has enough of it to satisfy, along with some proggier touches - that I can vote for it guilt-free and still keep my resolve to look more deeply into that period of Hawkwind.

Sure B's got that wacky Mutantes kind of thing going on, but it goes nowhere. The Hawkwind song legitimately rawks and I love the lead guitar on it.

An average Hawkwind track, good but not great. B doesnt do anything for me either so.

This is difficult!
I'm very partial to the Wind. Part of my teenage lost years, watching them rehearse and play in a local cowshed and as you all know I possess rockist tendencies.
B is just batshit bonkers and I applaud it. I don't particularly like it though.

Levitation ROCKS - with Peter on tubs who really drives it along. Some nice guitar too. I know the track backwards.

Robust stuff - a good choice

B was interesting but didn't really go anywhere - pleasant enough but a bit of a dog's dinner regarding being all over the place. I wasn't too keen on the vocals lead and backing. It did have something endearing about it though.

However, up against The Hawks, in full flow, no contest:

i liked B with its lil freaky self, mwhaha. happy, trippy percussivity and flute, even if pretty slight.

but i am allllll over the hawkwind track. if i say "levitation" 3 times, do ya think i could really levitate?

don't shatter my dreams, people.

B

I prefer the Brazilian proggers over Hawkwind just being Hawkwind.

Great track from the last great Hawkwind album with the added bonus of propulsive tubs from Baker.

B was not a bad little thing at all, good vocals, nice bongo rhythm and airy flute touches. I enjoyed it but it just can't compete with the might of A

A is just the right kind of dumb, very enjoyable

but B gets the exotic bonus from me.

Vocals on both tracks a bit crap.

Despite being the 1st band I ever saw live (1974, maybe 75, at New Oxford Theatre) I find Hawkwind haven’t aged to well for me, but the instrumental mid section sufficiently strong to get my vote.

A- nice song by Hawkwind very hooky.

B- Nice Brazilian vocals with prog accents. Nice song and I'll take it by a hair over the Hawkwind song which isn't much different than the rest of this era not that there is anything wrong with that.

Hawkwind. Just the best. Although listening now I realise it sounds a lot like a few other songs in their catalogue, notably 'Magnu'. 'Hawkwind Songs Sound Similar!' Do they still hold presses?
