Re: PC21- Round 4 Match 2
High Tide - a great track from their second eponymous album.
Featuring the powerhouse - Simon House on violin (later of Hawkwind)
They were heavy, They were great.
Love it!
My only doubt is lightweights like Jumper K will give it thirty seconds and then write something like 'bobbins'.
I am not that familiar with Random Hold so this track was new to me.
Interesting and pleasant stuff that held my attention for about 4 minutes then I started to get restless and had a desire to go away and play High Tide's debut Sea Shanties.
Excuse me, I must be off....!

Re: PC21- Round 4 Match 2
Wow, what an unholy mess A is! I actually enjoyed some parts of it for how absurdly OTT they were, but I mostly just hear everybody soloing at once. It doesn't help that it's ever-so-slightly out of tune - for 14 minutes! I almost want to vote for it, because it's the proggest thing I've ever heard - everything the goons love and everything the haters hate - all there in it's...uh...glory. What's a dilettante part-timer to do?
I know - I'll vote for B . (It's OK - more post-punk than prog, complete with requisite shouty vocal, but it's a welcome respite from the manic-ness.)

B was okay, but it didn't really stand out to me musically, anywhere along the way. (sorry.)
A was a freak fest, mwhhaha, with lovely slower sections and groovy instrumentation throughout. i'll take it. and have yet another flashback. maybe i'll end up talking to my sandwich.

Re: PC21- Round 4 Match 2
I know there are some High Tide tracks out there that aren't 14 minutes long. I would have been content with a single edit of the last 4 minutes, personally.
I enjoyed B more than I thought I would based on the type of thing it is, but I'll still go with

A Took forever to get going by which time I’d skipped ahead... a bit of a mess but they don’t make ‘em like that anymore
B I’m sure I saw them supporting Peter Gabriel at The Odeon. They didn’t go down well then or now.

The start of A might put some off but once it get's going there is some fantastic interplay between the guitar riffing and violin and nice vocals.
B certainly has a more post punk magazine vibe.

In my world, A is an entire album. By 16 different bands, recorded together, at the same time. I admire its breadth but the music is terrible.
B however should be something I could get into. Its just nondescript though. I can't appreciate any of it, derivative, dull and totally uninvolving.
A it is. Yah boo sucks C!

If they were good enough for Gabriel then they're good enough for me. Though they should really should have cut the track down to about 4.30.

Re: PC21- Round 4 Match 2
A was classic noodley old school second division Prog, plenty of virtuosity and soloing but little in the way of a tune, until the last 4 minutes when it suddenly becomes a song. The violin added a certain something.
B plodded along agreeably enough but didn't really hold my attention.

Re: PC21- Round 4 Match 2
I'm a sucker for violins in rock, but I always found High Tide's eponymous second a disjointed, off-sounding mess and very difficult to listen to...
Their debut is another matter, that's a bona fide heavy psych classic. So something off Sea Shanties would have stood a chance against Montgomery Clift, produced by Peter Hammill, if I remember correctly. It's great and I haven't listened to it for ages.
Thanks for reminding me, B

I cannot believe people say the Random Hold is too long after 14+ minutes of High Tide!
Maybe that's the problem - 20+ minutes of Random Hold AND HIgh Tide!
I like B better.

Random Hold plodded along purposefully, but never reached the heights of the High Tide, who produced a flotsam of enticement.

B started off great but meandered on after the vocal. No such issues for A...
