Re: PC21- Round 3 Match 3
Very tough call - I like these both. Yet another McLaughlin appearance (my second favorite of the three; his playing on that Miles album might be my favorite thing he's ever done) or a band that I'm just starting to get into/be aware of (thanks to the prog goons, though ironically I don't think this particular track is very proggy at all - I think it qualifies as what was at the time called 'heavy rock').
I'll come back to this.

A should have been a guitar solo.

Some blistering guitar on the EBB pick and great drumming. B is a good pick from that first MA album but ill give it to A here.

Re: PC21- Round 3 Match 3
This is tough. It's like comparing Jackson Pollock to Monet- the straight between the eyes-approach of A is great but the delicacy of the interplay on B is sublime as well!

Re: PC21- Round 3 Match 3
This is a really difficult match for me
My beloved Johnny Mc and Robert (with his mum driving the van)
A great track choice with some great blistering guitar - they really wore their hearts on their sleeves!
Then there's The Orchestra - Cobham, Laird, Hammer, McLaughlin and Goodman - virtuosos most certainly.
A great track too - plenty of light and shade.
Today, which way do I go:
In your face versus light and shade...?
Let's have some of the former!!!

Re: PC21- Round 3 Match 3
I'm realizing that, while the ensemble playing on B is really nice, and in the context of the entire album I'm sure it's a nice understated 'break', in this context there's just not enough McLaughlin - it's pretty much one riff, focusing on the tubs 'n' keys. It doesn't do much, yet garners just enough attention to keep it from being truly meditative.
The more I think about it the more I realize A is just much more visceral and exciting, even if they're nowhere near the players on a technical level.
Never thought I'd find myself accusing McLaughlin of underplaying, but there you have it...

B is subtle, unique, lovely in its own way. not as moving as some of their stuff, but a very worthy pick all the same.

Re: PC21- Round 3 Match 3
I found A bit tedious with horrible vocals. I've tried a few times with EBB but they are just not my thing at all and this ain't persuading me otherwise.
The whole mood of B was much more favourable, nice and relaxed with occasional loud stabs of guitar but I probably would have preferred it even more if the drummer hadn't insisted on trying to break out into a drum solo towards the end.

A has some nice guitar , but the vocals are indeed horrible.

A love the guitar sound on A, but B is where it's at, baby. That electric pianer is the shizzle in my dizzle.

The Mahavishnu track just excels at control. The EBB could have aced it by going wilder, but they did not.

Finally, a McLaughlin I thoroughly enjoy.
Restrained tension is something the Mahavishnu Orchestra excelled at.
And blimey, the EBB has really aged badly.

Clever guitar in A but whenever I hear EBB (and I have tried a fair bit over the years) I always think that whoever thought it was a good idea to put a microphone level with his face should be shot.
B is nice enough and although not really my cuppa it doesn’t have to be to get my vote.
