Re: PC21- Round 3 Match 1
B is pretty good, and has some very cool passages, but doesn't have anywhere near the excitement of A (also a far better context in which to hear McLaughlin than the track of his in round 2).
I hope it won't be dismissed on the basis of being jazz rather than prog. But it's rocking enough to qualify for me.
And if you disagree, you're a racist! (I kid! I kid!)

A: Not a period of Miles I'm into, but it has a pretty funky groove.
B: Not the style of prog I generally go for, but I like it from a rhythmic perspective and the skill of the musicians is impressive.

B is a bit busy but has some a couple of nice melodic parts.
A is more my cup of tea especially when the saxophone and bass clarinet come in.

I really love that first Happy The Man-album...Frank Wyatt and Kit Watkins at their best. Sadly it was ever diminishing returns after that until Watkins reappeared releasing the worst kind of new age drivel afterwards (Coco Roussell also played in the band)....this is my favourite track of it.
Miles was good but a bit stop start and lost me halfway...

The Jack Johnson sessions are just wonderful.
I love a bit of Miles me.
Delightful stuff, full off music and broad church prog at its best.
One of my prog goon compatriots is always rabbiting on about The Man.
I like what I've heard and I like this track - I have the first two albums and I don't recognise it....
It is really difficult choice but

Re: PC21- Round 3 Match 1
the miles track is indeed a major funkayyyy groove. i can't tell whether this particular miles is just more inherently kathish than some other tracks i've heard or whether i've simply been warming to milesness consistently over the years i've been exposed to it on this board. it's kickass/arse.
but B is also very my thing, especially the lovely dreamy parts. the busy bits didn't quite completely win me over, although musically well-done and they do make sense... it's a new york dream suite after all. i imagine they'd grow on me with more listens.
nice way to start the round.

Good match to start! A is fab fusion, really deep in the funky well; B is the kind of spacey, dreamy progressive gear that i like a lot, thanks for the heads up, picker.
Tough, but maybe miles by a whisker.

A- love this Miles John Mc, Cobham and Shorter with Dave Holland on bass. This a jams and certainly is close enough to a fusion piece.
B- I love this Happy the Man tune. Dreamy prog from a small level prog band. Lots of fun interludes and love the keyboards.
I'll take B over the well known Miles.

I've never heard that Miles track before. It's grooves very nicely and makes better use of John McLaughlin than his own solo track in the previous round. It does kind of lose its way toward the end though but up to then this is terrific fusion.
Happy The Man's debut is a terrific album full of gems. This suite is very typical of what to expect. Complex but always fun and accessible.

Miles for me - beautiful track. A
Unlucky pairing for Happy the Man, enjoyed that too and would have chosen it over many other picks in the previous round.

I really like the Happy The Man track.
But Miles just smokes it.

Word.
I've always considered HTM "prog by numbers" and this is no exception, but it has some rather nice bits... and kept me interested until the very end.
