This is agreat match!
Two CCs!
John Fahey a great steel-stringed acoustic guitarist
Wonderful!
An awesome selection!
The Tim Hardin selection is also delightful.
An extra track from TH3 I think - lovely.
So, this is very very very very tough
[Think C....!]
A has it
Yes, A has it

Two artists I like rather than love and that are somewhat hit-and-miss for me, even during their supposed peaks.
I think A ultimately engages me a bit more. I like the sentiment of B, but it feels longer even though it isn't.

Good match, this. Both have a lot of charm and appeal, though i guess i'm with hatzy with the engaging part.

Not familiar with Fahey but A was a lovely piece of melodic and deftly played guitar.
B's bluesy mood was very affective in creating a desolate feeling of longing that the lyrics evoked.
On balance it's more likely that'll I return to seek more of A than B but it's a another pretty close match.

I can admire the artistry of Fahey for sure but it's not really in the service of anything and I tired of listening. Would prefer some darker Fahey for sure. Hardin connected on every level.

Toughie. Fahey for me is at his best if he keeps his tracks concise and to the point. I hadn't listened to this particular Hardin-album before and I liked the slumberlike quality of it, in a Terry Callier-kind of way....

I've never really followed up on John Fahey, I think I've got a couple of albums lying around, none of his big hitters. It all seems pretty enough, but he doesn't seem to have the soul that I find in Robbie Basho's similar guitar stylings. I'm surprised it's taken this long for someone to pick him though, and its not an obvious choice. Quite pleasant, innit.
B sounds like Nina Simone doing folk. The guitar work reminds me a little of Jandek when he uses his conventional guitarist 'Eddie', the way it veers off on a tangent every now and then. It's a close tie this, they're both interesting picks that don't quite speak to me, even though they have obvious qualitites. But I think B is just that bit more interesting.

Excellent pair of songs.
After several plays, Tim Hardin's melancholy has one me over.
Staff in one of the Our Price's I worked in used to refer to my turn on the turntable as John's Misery Hour. Really enjoyed the Fahey too, though I'd be more likely to play Leo Kottke if I was after that kind of performance.

Fahey was obviously a very gifted guitarist but… as usual it just sounds clever.

Re: Folk Cup 2019 Semi Final Match 5
John Fahey isn't a folk musician by my estimation, no matter how much he borrowed from John Hurt, and this is one of his more outré stylings, enjoyable as it is in its clamorous all tension and no release way.
Tortured Tim isn't really my idea of a folkie, either. Nor a particularly gifted performer. I have to really be in the mood, and these days I hardly ever am.
A's glitterball guitar wins here, I think
