Folk Cup 2019 Semi Final Match 2 *n/e 11- C 4*

Postby never/ever » 19 Nov 2019, 09:29

A

Loudon Wainwright III- Thanksgiving

B

Christy Moore - Ordinary Man

This version comes the closest to it in case the above clip doesn't play. Just lose the narration...

Loudon Wainwright (the third?) as a bloke I have never been able to get into.

Talented and a nice voice but for me not a patch on Christy - well performed and poignant words

So B has it

B has it

Another tough tie that is hard to separate. B perhaps resonates with me a little more and I really liked the guitar but I loved A's poignancy.

close but I'll go A

it's practically gotta be a dang roll of the dice, these are so close. A is poignant (but with enough snark to take the edge off, which is kind of LW3's game) and has a lighter arrangement hand compared to B's dated synths. But no doubt who I prefer as a singer. I think B might speak to me a bit more, ultimately, though I wish the arrangement were a bit better. Blame the 80s.

(The vid on B won't play for me, but it's easy to find on Youtube- I presume it's the studio version being chosen, there are also several live ones.)

An easier choice than in match 1. Wainwright's was good, possibly overlong and a reasonable choice. Moore's vocals I much preferred and the song didn't over elaborate it's point. Glad it was a live version rather than the studio.

I like B, but A is just a bit more interesting to me.

A is a fairly brave choice, being long and low-key, not the kind of track to grab you by the scruff of the neck and give your chops a good slap. But I kind of like it, the (non-slide) guitar is quite pretty the way it slowly picks it's way along daintily.

B's more of a tradtional blue-collar chugalong, it feels much more workmanlike and lacking inspiration to me.

Christy Moore I found a bit too in yout face no finesse or letting the song breathe. Surprisingly sweet for Loudon although some bitterness as expected lyrically. POssibly not the Loudon I'd have chosen but still...

I'll have a look for a replacement vid for B in a moment.

Christy is a true gent, a bard of a vintage generation. Always pleasant and entertaining, even if the subject matter is that of hardship. Perhaps that is why I am more inclined to believe the storytelling of LW3 as he adds gravitas to the tension building narrative.

A good match with cunning guitar work on both tracks. I was all set to vote A but in the end I preferred

B

I prefer the work of his wife and half of his children, but I've still got a soft spot for Loudon: an old school friend was 'into' him, as we used to say without irony quotes in the 1970s. I remember him as a wordsmith, rather than a singer, but this was mostly about the music I thought. Lovely guitar sounds. No idea what the song's about, if anything, but I was content to bob along to that guitar, trailing my hand in the lap steel.
Some dynamic playing in B, too, to be fair, but I'm not particularly enamoured of Mr Moore's voice (yeah, I know...)
