I enjoyed A but I didn't find it anything too special.
I enjoyed B more and found it more engaging
I didn't get the video though....
So B has it
B has it

Difficult to separate these, both seemed cut from the same cloth despite separated by many decades. I like both about the same so it's hard to choose but after a couple of listens to both I plump for A

Joe Henry is by all accounts a lovely guy (I've somehow managed to never meet him to my knowledge despite running in similar circles for years now) and a good, at times great, producer (he did that wonderful Solomon Burke album a decade or so ago) but his own stuff has always left me a bit cold. All the right influences, all the right sounds, not much in the way of original vision - the typical story. John Wesley Harding for the new millennium.
A is one of those influences - on him, on Jansch, on Martin Carthy - on a lot of people we've seen here. Most of them bettered him, but he's still, as they say, a seminal figure. And at least it's not "Blues Run the Game."

Found this quite a poser. Jackson C Frank is worthy, a civil rights protest song, a decent message. Earnest voice, strong chordal playing. Dylanesque but lacking the poetic touch, not as affecting as I tend to find Och's voice.
Joe Henry sounding like an out-take from John Wesley Harding though lacking Dylan's vocal idiosyncrasies.
Have played each song at least four times alternately, and have swung around to Joe Henry - the Frank became a little to strident, the mellowness of Henry's sound winning out.
By the thickness of a rizla, B

There's a stridency and warmth to Jackson here, isn't there? It might be a protest song, but he sounds quite pleased that hes's singing about it, and I quite like that. His guitar-playing is a bit rent-a-strum though, there's not much delicacy or space to breathe in there, he's just hitting those strings over and over for all he's worth.
I'm hoping B is rubbish, just so I can say I'd prefer to listen to 4'33. I'm sorry, I hope that doesn't bring a barrage of abuse, I've nowhere to Shelter from the Storm. It's a decent enough take off of Dylan in his post-prime years, and as I'm feeling quite generous of spirit this afternoon, I'm willing to overlook the indebtedness, just because I slightly preferred it.

I like Jackson, but he seems like one of those artists who never quite matched that one song, obviousy Blues Run The Game in this instance. ALso an artist I was exopecting to appear, albeit the less obvious end of the obvious scale. JOe Henry though - intense, moody just the sort of thing I love.

A sounds like Don McLean on steroids. Very confident and in your face, it certainly leaves a mark.
Henry does that in a less anthemic way but I find it to be a bit more open and memorable in the end.

Jackson C. Frank keeps popping up on my youtube “feed”. He sounds fresh as a lettuce.
B’s OK. I hear Dylan’s Up to Me poking out at the edges a bit.

Re: Folk Cup 2019 Semi Final Match 1
Chip knew Jackson when he was in London in the 1960s, and as a result I know more about him and his sad story than most of his contemporaries, which kind of prejudices me towards him, although the song didn't engage me much in the one time I was prepared to listen to it
I know nothing about Mr Henry, but find the Dylanisms rather tiresome, and I didn't get to the end.
