I'm always slightly suspicious of Seth Lakeman, he's one of those who seems to win awards and gets played on folk slots on the radio. You always have to be a bit boring and ersatz to do that, anyone more adventurous or interesting doesn't even get a look in. This isn't too bad, to be fair, though that fiddle is a definitely straining to be trad in a worthy way. The sort of thing I can tolerate, rather than choose to listen to.

The second planxty pick of the cup, and it appears to be a much more relaxed effort than the previous one, and also a touch forcedly trad in the vocal department. This is a really boring song, isnt it? Sounds like a hymn that got lost down the back of a very chintzy sofa. Christ, there are Liberal Democrats more exciting than this.

I prefer the Christy songs to the Andy songs by and large, but a little Liam O'Flynn and all is right with the world. That's a B.

Lakeman's alright - I feel like I've heard some stuff by him I've liked - but this one sounds a little too designed to impress.

Liked both, preferred the plaintive Planxty.

Both okay, but A sounds more like an artist singing in his own voice, and B sounds more like someone trying to sound like a bunch of other people.

Seth Lakeman was very pleasant and bopped along nicely.

Lovely fiddle!

Then there is he glorious Planxty.

Andy Irvine sings this great song with superb feeling and precision - delightful

Easy, B has it

B has it

A was a pretty infectious and enjoyable song that rollicked along quite nicely.

The Planxty track was quite the opposite in mood but I love the mournful sound of uilleann pipes which always brings to mind visions of lonely, desolate windswept hills. A lovely melancholic track.

Nice tie , hard to choose but I'll go A for being something completely new to me

I like Lakeman, and have seen him live many times. The problem is that most of his songs end up sounding the same - its that jagged fiddle delivery that he uses on just about everything.

Interesting Planxty choice, and for me better than the one used earlier in the competition. Lovey, relaxing track.

A: There's a strong whiff of the ersatz to this, some of this instrumentation may well be computer generated. I cannot abide it.
B: I can do with this, nicely. The kind of thing I would have slagged relentlessly once upon a tie toe. But if feels more legit to these ears. And, since I've recently purchased a waxed cotton walking hat I feel obligated to say...

B

Lakeman strikes me as a fRootsian type of honest bloke doing trad. It's just missing that bit of depth that the great artists and bands have but it is definitely jaunty and nice.

Ah, the Andy Irvine-version! There's a Christy Moore-version of As I Roved Out too which is classic as well. Both of them would have been worthy opponents here.

I haven’t heard B for donkey’s years. It’s an absolute beauty that flies tearing through these quarters and leaves A flipping and floundering on the nursery slopes of folk.

A is new to me and impressed me a lot - so much so that I'm actually tempted to vote against my own entry.
But no.
I've known As I Roved Out (Andy) by heart for more than 40 years and it still slays me.

I know AS I Roved out by Kate Rusby, which has spoiled me a bit for this version which lacks the warmth and charm of KR's version. Liked A so
