Roy Harper - I always think I should enjoy his music more than I do. I know that's my bad and my loss. I am not sure what it is but it rarely grabs me.

I found the track pleasant - but as above.

I love a bit of button accordion me.

A very pleasant little tune

I don't know much about her but I recall reading somewhere that she had worked with Dónal Lunny, Christy Moore, Máire Brennan et alia which can't be bad.

Wasn't she in The Waterboys for a while...?

Anyway, back to the tune, pleasant but it didn't continue to grab me fully after a couple of minutes....

Let me play Harper again..... [4 minutes and 6 seconds later]

Sorry Roy - not a track selection I could warm to

So B has it

B has it

I have tried with Harper. I admire him more than I like him.

Interesting match because B is just the opposite. There is nothing special about what Shannon does. There are plenty of electric folk artists that do more challenging material, play more outlandishly, or sound more exotic. I've asked myself what the difference is. I think the difference is she radiates joy in everything she plays. It's just that simple.

I like Roy Harper, and I love some of his stuff, but this track - not so much.

Sharon Shannon I have seen multiple times, and although (as Hatz says) there is nothing 'special' about her approach, she is always entertaining and in some way more 'authentic' than a lot of folk artists. And I like this tune.

Not one of Roy Harper's more memorable songs but I always going to vote for something by him. The Sharon Shannon track was pleasant but ultimately insubstantial and not very memorable.

Roy's song is a pleasant enough track but I always enjoyed Sharon's infectious music, seen her live a couple of times.

If B is the best of Irish I wouldn’t want to listen to sub par Irish. It must be really terrible.

I saw Roy Harper supporting Joanna Newsom a few years back, and he put on an incredible performance. The power in his voice, the depth of emotion, such a fire burning away there. It was a thing of wonder. He's kind of whispy and gentle on record, I don't understand it at all, he's a proper pale shadow of the guy I saw. This is ok , the guitar being much more interesting than that very 70s sounding vocal line again.

I think we all know that the best that is Irish is the Virgin Prunes. This isn't even second best. It's horrible.

Here's the mice from Bagpuss instead.

South Africa is one of the less celebrated tracks from his second best album Lifemask. The Lord's Prayer is the masterpiece from that album but at 23 mins a bit long for this contest but nevertheless South Africa is still a nice pick with sweet guitar and soothing harmonies.

B is chirpy, bright and enjoyable and sounds like suitable music for an upbeat commercial

A it is though B was not without its charms.

Phwoar... both tracks are reminders of why folk will never be more than a niche genre for me. ABSTAIN

I listened to B first. I'm a real sucker for accordions as a rule and do like Sharon Shannon, but this is from her not-so-good debut and she's ill-served by Donal Lunny's plodding arrangement.

So I thought Roy Harper would win this hands down...

Well, I hadn't listened to Side 1 of Lifemask for aeons, and fucking hell: Roy really gets on my tits with the wobbly voice and the OTT reverb. It almost made me physically unwell. Now had it been Me and My Woman....

Anyway, a reluctant B from me.

A - Not a big fan of Roy but always fine his guitar picking interesting. His vocals could be better but good enough.

B- sorry just not a fan of annoy Irish folk music like this. The whole thing is an ugly mess.

The Roy Harper track kind of loomed up and disappeared again, like in those empire-building games when your dock has been torched by Etruscans and there’s no-one left living to empty the hold so the ship sails on by without delivering the goods.

However, B is a full-on shocker.

Come back Roy!

Harper's an odd one. I was never impressed, have heard very little, but recently my son brought me some records he wanted me to sell for him, and there were about 15 of his albums in there. I had no idea. There's some nifty urgent playing going on, and the choir of voices is nice- is it multi-tracking? Haven't got a clue what any of it's about, mind, and while in other genres that wouldn't be a problem, I come to expect some kind of clarity from a folk song. But fuck it, why quibble, I really like the guitar playing and may even try some of the spring-off's albums before I list them on discogs. 6 / 10

Blimey, this is an instrumental, isn't it? It's lively enough, as other's have noted, and it's highly reminiscent of a Penguin Cafe Orchestra tune I can't quite place. But nothing like as developed as the PCO (a secret love of mine) and not really folky. Not that Harper was. 5 / 10
