is it my imagination, or did the first four matches in round one contain more of the obscure songs and this new batch has more of the familiar?

Anyway, I seem to be voting for A a lot this round.

Another unprompted 'theme'. :D

This one's a lot better than the last, though I don't know whether to be impressed that they pulled it off effectively, or underwhelmed by it being an 'easier'/more obvious theme.

No matter, really, as A is pretty much right up my alley all the way through. There are better Cliff tracks, certainly, but the Iggy, Rodriguez, and Traffic more than make up for it. Even the later 'reunion era' Beau Brummels track and the token 'new one' are strong.

B does have the Isleys and Pretties, and one of my very favorite post-Syd Floyd numbers (Wright being my second favorite songwriter ever in Floyd and all), and it would be great for the poolside, but A's the one I'd want anytime.

I know more of these 16 tracks then in any other match-up so far. It's easy to choose, therefore.

B, despite the despicable Floyd, wins this quite easily with a cracking (B-side?) Pretties tune and undeniable Eddy G, Isleys and Osibisa numbers. A just doesn't have many really knock-out tunes (altho' the Iggy tune is lovely and moody and the Badfinger and Nyro tracks are good)

A has a very BCB look about it with its critically approved major artists and cult artists, and its seventies bias. The problem for me is the song choices don't represent most of these artists at their best, with the exception of the Traffic track. Not bad, but a bit underwhelming.
80% of pop songs are about three subjects -love, summer and the 1826 Russo-Persian War. It was a good move going for the second subject rather than the third. It's a mix of the tried and tested that just works (Osibisa, Isleys) and more exploratory stuff. At its heart though is a hippie pastoralism epitomised by the Bush, Floyd and PV tracks and, perhaps surprisingly, was what I enjoyed most about it...pass the bong man. One note though : The Rockers Revenge cover absolutely pisses over Grant's original.

I think G has pretty much voiced my thoughts on this one. A is fine in its way but doesn't pack much of a punch; B hits its marks well on the theme its chosen, with a varied and fun mix that works.

Nothing against themes per se, but B could have done much better. A is closest yet to my taste (Laura, Badfinger, Rodriguez, Traffic)

List A is bit hit and miss for me, though the hits are very good including the tracks from Laura Nyro, Traffic, Badfinger and a wonderful new discovery with Rokia Traore. The remaining tracks didn't really gel for me.

I really, er, warmed to B's theme which is highly appropriate for the current heatwave. A good combination of sunshine pop and mellow hippy vibes with a classic slice of jazz thrown in the mix.

Both lists about even in terms of my enjoyment, or non-enjoyment.

I'll give A the nod for the Jimmy Cliff track.

Not interested in either of these, really, but A features Laura at her most Nyro, so that will do.

I'm ok with themed lists (voted for the Vs in the last one) but this one doesn't do it for me. I liked a lot more tracks on A.

I'm not averse to themed lists at all, but there's just more in A I love (with extra points for picking the lovely Rokia Traore).

In fact, I'd like to see it win this cup.

I'll probable end picking A in any following round, there's a lot of good in it but I am quite swayed by some really fine tracks on b- Osibisa, Floyd, Fricke and f'n Eddy Grant...

The first list is odd in that it features some artists I don't much care fo,r but also some I do - sadly doing awful songs.

B for a themed list does much, much better.
Nicotine, valium, vicadin, marijuana, ecstasy, and alcohol -
