Good stuff.

I can't abide Joni, but A has the best Cymande track, and my fave Big O song - I mean, how stunning is 'Crying'? really? But it's all a bit too tasteful, somehow.

B has that killer Adverts' single as well as an appealingly strange Can selection. And there's Donny again! if ever a song was t o o s l o w ......

Toughest draw so far. That Dangermouse-album is killer, just can't get with Run the Jewels, strangely enough.
Up against Hard Hands, Tropicalia and Cymande, slightly drowned by the slower stuff.
Damn...

Tough. Both class lists. With much respect to B (especially the gutsy Run the Jewels pick), I think I have to go with A, largely on the strength of Cymande, and "Crying".
Freak out. Far out.

Once again, two great lists. I'm liking this batch better than the first. After a lot of thought I'm giving it to B, which doesn't let up - the last 4 form a particularly inspiring run, and I like how it un-self-consciously avoids the WGWG (White Guys With Guitars) trap.

A is great too, but I like the idea of Jay Reatard more than the reality, and would have appreciated a slightly rarer Orbison track. Nice Joni pick, though, and always nice to hear Cymande.

A, despite the Joni Mitchell entry

FYI - I found the Jay Reatard - It Ain't Gonna Save Me link a bit hinky, skipping the first 50 secs. of the song but I found it via Google.

Fuck, this is a hell of a match. There are plenty of lesser lists that are gonna go through at the expense of one of you guys, which is a shame.
I'm gonna have to do a stars count to try separate these too properly

List A

Ray Barretto - Together ***
Lucille Mathis - I'm Not Your Regular Woman ***
Gal Costa & Caetano Veloso - Baby ***
Jay Reatard - It Ain't Gonna Save Me **
Joni Mitchell - Amelia **
Roy Orbison - Crying *** (lose one star for over-exposure)
The Afghan Whigs - Citi Soleil **
Cymande - The Message ***

21

List B

Can – Thief ***
Donny Hathaway – I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know **
Sun Ra – When There is No Sun ***
The Adverts – Gary Gilmore’s Eyes ***
Danger Mouse – 99 Problems **
Sam the Sham - I Couldn't Spell ***
Missisippi Shieks – I am the Devil **
Run the Jewels – Lie, Cheat, Steal **

20

Damn. Sorry, B.

Christ this pair took some separating. Although any list with Sun Ra, the Sheiks and Sam the Sham should get my full endorsement, Joni and Roy (in a weaker list overall) get the nod here.

List A is a first for this cup, in that it brings a few tunes which are from outside my normal kind of thing, but still surprised me with how good they are. Those first 5 tracks are ace.

List B is a decent effort, and much better than some in the other match-ups that have won. But it just doesn't do it for me.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.
