This is a bit in the future but we fancy Sussex for a 5 day/week long trip.

We are looking at self catering cottages. We like walks with the dog so somewhere that makes that easy to do would be good. Obviously we'd like to be within 10 miles or so of the coast too.

I really don't know much about it so :

a) Where would you recommend to stay... any areas/towns particularly worthy of mention?

b) Can anyone recommend any self catering cottage firms? I've been looking at www.amberleyhousecottages.co.uk who are great but I'm guessing there must be loads of others?

c) What should we be looking to do - attractions etc. They have to be dog friendly though.

Anything else you think may be of benefit to us would be greatly appreciated.

The whole Midhurst/Chichester/Petworth part of Sussex is really quite lovely. West Wittering beach is stunning, if a little busy during the summer.

I think you'd be much better off with AirBnB than cottage firms.

Yeah I thought about AirBnB Toby.. I'll check them out for the area.....cheers.

Chichester I know pretty well (we visit the Festival Theatre two or three times a year) and it is lovely.... I'm thinking I'd quite like somewhere I can get to the coast within 15 minutes but also have access to forests/woodland where we can walk the dog etc.

Another vote for Petworth. The House is stunning, and has a magnificent collection of Turner's and of course the Gibbon's wood carvings. It also has massive grounds , all of which are prime south Downs walks. Petworth is a delight, and it is only 15 mins drive to Bognor or Worthing, or half an hour to Littlehampton ( which is on the up). I think you would be very happy with Petworth as a base. The problem with getting any closer to the sea down that way , is the the coastal plain is very flat, and a bit dull. Although you could see what can be found in the harbour's around Itchenor, Bosham and Dell Quay if you like inlets and easy walking.

Be aware that in the summer the traffic in all these places can be a nightmare.

Yeah I think we'd avoid the summer to be fair Mike.

Thanks for that.... I'd quite like a sandy beach reasonably close (and I know that's difficult in that part of the world).... I'm liking Hastings/Battle area maybe... but Lewes has the castles... there's loads of castles that way....

I'd definitely recommend a visit to Bexhill, for the stunning De La Warr Pavillion, a fantastic art deco gallery. Not sure if it's dog-friendly though.

I was going to recommend Bracklesham Bay. We had a house there when I was growing up, and I spent 17 fantastic summers there. I used to take the kids there when they were little, and the beaches were just sand from breakwater as far as you could go ( when the tide was out obviously...). However, I have just googled it for a pic to show you, and unbelievably it is now a shingle beach with stones all the way up to the sea wall, which used to be eight feet above the sand!!! What an incredible thing the sea is.

No I was too busy watching King Lear with Sir Ian McKellen this year - shame, would have been nice to have met you there for your choices.

Chichester? No, I knew where it was before I set off.
