Feb/Mar Reviews

Postby Minnie the Minx » 28 Mar 2021, 02:03

Good God! I'm first! :o

Well hello, all! A nice disc this month entitled "Mission Impossible"- hmm- what is it about the disc that's impossible, I wonder? Let's find out!

1. A cute little jingle for Radio 1 which I think may feature a piano-heavy Slade?
2. This sounds really familiar, but I'm struggling to name the band - grand, guitar heavy happiness!
3. Hmm. This is the theme tune to Mission Impossible- but with lyrics! I am confused, and intrigued!
4. A jaunty countryish tune about bales of cocaine falling from the sky!
5. The Who! But not The Who! This is great, who is this? It sounds like fabulously drunk cats!
6. This is ace- with a different singer, I would swear was The Jam
7. Astrud Gilberto's "Who Needs Forever" - can't name the cover band - vaguely Nouvelle Vagueish?
8. Another Radio 1 jingle - not Slade this time!
9. Wow, this is fabulous- I'm guessing sixties female singer- very catchy. Love it!
10. SONIC YOOF
11. Madame Butterfly -Big Malc! Fabulous
12. This sounds oddly like 80s era Adam and the Antz, but I know it isn't!
13. Wow. This is great. Starts like Germ Free Adolescents. Ascends madly. Fabulous!
14. Jools Holland encouraging us to buy some Squeeze!
15. BROADCAST

What a fucking tippy top disc this was, pal! Splendid stuff. Can't wait to hear the reveals!
You come at the Queen, you best not miss.

1. A cute little jingle for Radio 1 which I think may feature a piano-heavy Slade?

Radio One jingle based on “My Friend Stan” by Slade.

2. This sounds really familiar, but I'm struggling to name the band - grand, guitar heavy happiness!

Yo La Tengo!

3. Hmm. This is the theme tune to Mission Impossible- but with lyrics! I am confused, and intrigued!

Credited to “The Kane Triplets,” this was probably just some studio trying to cash in on the popularity of the show with a recording by studio musicians and singers.

4. A jaunty countryish tune about bales of cocaine falling from the sky!

Thee Reverend Horton Heat

5. The Who! But not The Who! This is great, who is this? It sounds like fabulously drunk cats!

Petra Haden, from her album ‘Petra Haden Sings The Who Sell Out’ which an a capella recreation of that entire Who album.

6. This is ace- with a different singer, I would swear was The Jam

The Chords, who must have played a lot of gigs with The Jam back in the day.

7. Astrud Gilberto's "Who Needs Forever" - can't name the cover band - vaguely Nouvelle Vagueish?

Thievery Corporation

8. Another Radio 1 jingle - not Slade this time!

Radio One jingle based on “Everyday” by…..Slade.

9. Wow, this is fabulous- I'm guessing sixties female singer- very catchy. Love it!

Margo Guryan, from her brilliant 1968 album ‘Take a Picture.’

10. SONIC YOOF

:)

11. Madame Butterfly -Big Malc! Fabulous

Yesiree.

12. This sounds oddly like 80s era Adam and the Antz, but I know it isn't!

An early single by That Petrol Emotion.

13. Wow. This is great. Starts like Germ Free Adolescents. Ascends madly. Fabulous!

Dayton, Ohio’s own Guided by Voices.

14. Jools Holland encouraging us to buy some Squeeze!

15. BROADCAST
Yep.

What a fucking tippy top disc this was, pal! Splendid stuff. Can't wait to hear the reveals!

Always a pleasure, Min.

1. Slade Radio One Jingle 1
2. Yo La Tengo – “Sugarcube”
3. The Kane Triplets – “Theme from Mission Impossible”

Okay, my turn I guess:

Track One has a very 80’s New Wave kind of sound, with a chorus of “we used to talk about girls who play guitars.”
Track Two is a catchy dance number about beautiful big girls.
Track Three has an interesting 90’s noisy alt rock sound.
Track Four is a funky old school rap number. I’m guessing Schoolly D?
Track Five is a cool moody but upbeat song with a chorus of “she’s got all the world in her hands.” Probably my favorite song on this mix.
Track Six is a lively dance number from somewhere in the East. India if I had to guess.
Track Seven is a beautiful instrumental played on synthesizers.
Track Eight is an ambient piece with water sounds throughout.

Overall, a very enjoyable mix of music that is all new to me. Thank you.

An entertaining mix has come my way from across the sea -

1. 70's funk song in the Earth Wind and Fire/Family Stone vein. It sounds familiar and I probably own it but I'm not sure who it is. Good start.
2. A country song with a familiar sounding female vocal. Very nice but no idea who it is. Good band.
3. Country/Americana with a male lead this time. Well done and again sounds familiar. I'm guessing it's of recent vintage. I like it.
4. Rumba beat, great horns, percussion. Not sure of the language but I'm getting the message.
5. Singer/songwriter troubadour, the offspring of Gordon Lightfoot, no idea who. Nice percussion, good band. Liking this a lot.
6. Again singer/songwriter, female this time in the Lucinda vein. Another winner, another good band.
7. Bakersfield country sound, more good musicianship. Dwight Yoakum?
8. Great pop song with synthesized touches. This is a highlight, very appealing female vocal. Modern sounding.
9. Very good instrumental, great keyboard, horns, the band in general. Really loving the organ. Love it.
10. A pop/indie song that I like but it's not grabbing me as much as most of the mix. Modern sounding.
11. Beautiful acoustic guitar, British folk singer. I think I've heard this before but no idea who it is. Very nice.
12. Very nice country song with interesting instrumentation. Female vocal sounds familiar.
13. Really like this, rollicking and appealing. Great drums, fuzzy guitar, wall of sound treatment. Good one.
14. Another nice female lead. Good band, especially the bass and drums. Powerful voice, no idea who it is, sounds like a modern cut.
15. I've definitely heard this before and again probably own it. Is this the Dillards? Anyway I like it a lot.
16. Interesting and pleasant, kind of 70's pop/folk. Pretty but I'm not really connecting with it.

Great job mixer! I'm looking forward the reveal and there's going to be several I want to check out further.

It is indeed EWF from I AM probably still my favourite EWF album. I find their arrangements immense and joyful

2. A country song with a familiar sounding female vocal. Very nice but no idea who it is. Good band.

One of my favourite albums from last year Modern Appalachia by Sarah SIskind

3. Country/Americana with a male lead this time. Well done and again sounds familiar. I'm guessing it's of recent vintage. I like it.

Recent discovery - WIllie Dunn, a Candian who is sonmetimes known as the native American Leonard Cohen.

4. Rumba beat, great horns, percussion. Not sure of the language but I'm getting the message.

From a pair of comps Saoco vols 1 and 2 highlighting 50s/60s music of Puerto Rico

5. Singer/songwriter troubadour, the offspring of Gordon Lightfoot, no idea who. Nice percussion, good band. Liking this a lot.

THis is JAmes McMurtry, son of LOnesome Dove author Larry

6. Again singer/songwriter, female this time in the Lucinda vein. Another winner, another good band.

You'll know I have a liking for female singer/songwriters. Another recent discovery. There's loads of them out there so it's usually somethng in the voice that sways me, as here - Meg Hutchinson

7. Bakersfield country sound, more good musicianship. Dwight Yoakum?

Yep it's Dwight. THat first run of albums is as good as it gets for this sort og thing,

8. Great pop song with synthesized touches. This is a highlight, very appealing female vocal. Modern sounding.

The New Pornographers, a band notable for accommodating three solo careers, Neko Case, Carl Newman recording as A.C Newman and Dan Bejar recording as Destroyer. No egos on show and they seem to love t when they reunite for another album.

9. Very good instrumental, great keyboard, horns, the band in general. Really loving the organ. Love it.

The Mohawks, who as far as I know only made this one album

10. A pop/indie song that I like but it's not grabbing me as much as most of the mix. Modern sounding.

Magic KIds, a Wilson fanboy for sure but I think this is done with some of the style and orignality of BW even if it can never match the master

11. Beautiful acoustic guitar, British folk singer. I think I've heard this before but no idea who it is. Very nice.

Phil Beer. I think I've sent you the song (by Jimmy Webb) before in a different version, but it really works here done folk style

12. Very nice country song with interesting instrumentation. Female vocal sounds familiar.

The Sundays, only 3 albums made but all equally great
]
13. Really like this, rollicking and appealing. Great drums, fuzzy guitar, wall of sound treatment. Good one.

Solo cut by Amy Millan who sings with both Stars and Broken Social Scene

14. Another nice female lead. Good band, especially the bass and drums. Powerful voice, no idea who it is, sounds like a modern cut.

Great debut album from last year that sort of disappeared under the radar - Katie Pruitt

15. I've definitely heard this before and again probably own it. Is this the Dillards? Anyway I like it a lot.

Yes The Dillards - Gotta love THe Dillards straddling Bluegrass and Newgrass but much more besides, some good old country rock and even baroque pop in the mix. True one-offs

16. Interesting and pleasant, kind of 70's pop/folk. Pretty but I'm not really connecting with it.

I'm always on the lookout for 60s buried treasure in fields of chamber/baroque pop, pschedelica and sunshine pop or anuy combination thereof. Think this might just sneak into 1970, probably needs listening to in its entirety as it sort of flows as an orhstral suite kind of thing

Great job mixer! I'm looking forward the reveal and there's going to be several I want to check out further.
As always you're welcome.

1. Earth WInd &Fire - In The Stone
2. Sarah Siskind - Punk Rock Girl
3. Willie Dunn Yellowhead's Song
4. Cortijo y su Combo - El Negro Bembon
5. James McMurtry - Down ACross The Delaware
6. Meg Hutchinson - Hard To Change
7. Dwighy Yoakam - Little Ways
8. The New Pornographers - Champions of Red Wine
9. The Mohawks - Rocky Mountain Roundabout
10. Magic Kids Candy
11.Phil Beer - All My Loves Laughter
12. THe Sundays - I Feel
13. Amy Millan - Headfull
14. Katie Prutt - Grace Has A Gun
15. The Dillards - Copperfields
16. Wichita Fall - SUnny Road

Great mix of unkown to me stuff that was all pretty great.
Lots of rootsy soul blues and country and dash of rock n roll all pretty much up my street and really enjoyable listen. Some really great soulful vocals. Interested in who everyone is, especially Track 6.

TRACK 1
Really like this - a bit of soul pop with a great chorus
Not sure who this is but I like it a lot

TRACK 2
A sort of Do Wop number, great stuff, girl group vocals

TRACK 3
A nice slice of rock n roll, a bluesy number with a great vocal, Wanda Jacksonish

TRACK 4
You have to love a track that opens with storm sounds, 60s garage psych number , new to me, and very nice, almost Nico type vocal

TRACK 5
Louder punky number with female really good vocal, short and sweet, as this sort of thing usually is, but very enjoyable uptempo track, that grows on you the more you hear it.

TRACK 6
Great track, Lonely Girl, I have heard this before but not sure who it is
Fantastic falsetto vocal , a real soul gem.

TRACK 7
Some surfin geetar, not sure who this is but I think going by the production its a modern take on surf music, regardless its great.

TRACK 8
Running Out of Fools - Aretha - love it

TRACK 9
Love this - I think its The Softies who Im pretty sure I heard of thru the mix club at some point. Lovely track.

TRACK 10
Another indie type number, no idea who but like this track a lot, great lead vocal

TRACK 11
Sixties girl group number, but again new to me, lovely organ, again great stuff

TRACK 12
Another soul number, lovely vocal, really like this too. Wonderful harmonies

TRACK 13
Great live blues with a tinge of country track, this may or may not be Lucinda Williams live somewhere or other

TRACK 14
French electro pop number, always good combo for some reason.

TRACK 15
Very nice folky country track with a really nice lead vocal and harmonies.

TRACK 16
The wonderfully underrated Guess Who and Star Baby from maybe their last great album Road Food. I love this band, wonderful to listen to if your having a beer or three.

Very enjoyable mix, not a dud on it for me, thank you Mixer!

An obscure track by an obscure group. Sometimes by The Zoo.

TRACK 8

The 22 year old Aretha in 1964.

TRACK 9

so wrapping things up for the month, disc from Mr Boom, some great old favourites, and some to find out more about with only a couple of misfires.

1) Pleasant bright and breezy female vocals perked up with a great lush orchestral arrangement.
2) Brtish 70s singer songwriter feel verging into somethng folky with great full on vocals, Terry Reid style that I should recgonise
3) Not too dissimilar vibe here
4) Not too keen on this one. A bit dull and too many proggy touches. Reminds me of Collins era Genesis which is about as far removed as you can get from anything I'd want to listen to.
5) Nor this. All a bit inconsequential.
6) This is a bit more like it. SOunds a helluva lot like Ian Hunter.
7) First impressions This is fabulous. Second impressions - I know this , I own this I'm sure. Finally figured out this was Lndsey Buckingham
8) XTC or Partridge at least as this doesn't sound like the album version. Great of course.
9)..and Mr Harper makes it three for three
10) and the run continues courtesy of Mr Wainwright Sr
11) Don't know this one but like it. SOunds like Roy again, particularly reminds me of the track Forget Me Not, but then you wouldn't have two Roy songs would you?
12) This rather lovely, if a tad overblown. Sure I recognise the voice but can't place it.
13) All rather delicate and hoping the song followed in a similar vein to the intro, except there is no song, so while this was pleasnat enough, a bt of a letdown.

Thanks for the mix, some old favourites there, and interested to find out who the first two were.

The Fish wrote:1) Pleasant bright and breezy female vocals perked up with a great lush orchestral arrangement.

The Songs That We Sing from Charlotte Gainsbourg, and her 2006 album 5:55.

2) Brtish 70s singer songwriter feel verging into somethng folky with great full on vocals, Terry Reid style that I should recognize

You may have seen Bert Sommer in the Woodstock film singing this track , Jennifer. In 1967, Sommer joined The Left Banke, as lead singer, replacing Steve Martin Caro.

3) Not too dissimilar vibe here

Abram Brown Continued by Cat Stevens long time side man Alun Davies, from his solo album Daydo

4) Not too keen on this one. A bit dull and too many proggy touches. Reminds me of Collins era Genesis which is about as far removed as you can get from anything I'd want to listen to.

Cat Stevens himself from Mona Bona Jakon and I Think I See The Light

5) Nor this. All a bit inconsequential.

Bella Bella by Andy Pratt of Avenging Annie fame

6) This is a bit more like it. SOunds a helluva lot like Ian Hunter.

The wonderfully produced Stardust by David Essex

7) First impressions This is fabulous. Second impressions - I know this , I own this I'm sure. Finally figured out this was Lndsey Buckingham

Indeed Shadow of the Wests from this first solo album Law and Order

8) XTC or Partridge at least as this doesn't sound like the album version. Great of course.

Yes Mr Partridge from the Fuzzy Warbles series Vol 4 and the demo for Skylarkings Season Cycle

9)..and Mr Harper makes it three for three

Roy and Hallucinating Light the single version

10) and the run continues courtesy of Mr Wainwright Sr

The wonderful Motel Blues from Loudon Wainwright III , Alex Chilton also does a great version

11) Don't know this one but like it. SOunds like Roy again, particularly reminds me of the track Forget Me Not, but then you wouldn't have two Roy songs would you?

This is the Beauty of Earls Court but Robyn Hitchcock

12) This rather lovely, if a tad overblown. Sure I recognise the voice but can't place it.

And When Its Over by Bert Sommer again from the very hard to find Ultra Violet soundtrack album

13) All rather delicate and hoping the song followed in a similar vein to the intro, except there is no song, so while this was pleasnat enough, a bt of a letdown.

Elliott Smith and Figure 8 track Bye

Glad you liked at least some of it ! Was fun to put together.

Never a big Cat Stevens fan although I'm happy to admit he wrote two of the greatest songs ever. First Cut and Father and Son. I own the Bert Sommer album (Road To TRavel) so no surpise I liked those two.
