Well, i'm very happy; won't have the official time for a few days, and i don't like to wear a watch or carry a phone when i'm running, but from from my i-pod platlist i believe i crossed the line in a personal time of about 48-49 mins. That would be the fastest time i have ever run a 10km race in!

Warm and snowless winter let me tackle another part of the Appalachian Trail in CT. This section of the trail takes you thru St John's Ledges, long slaps of Pink Granitic Gneiss, in Kent, CT. In the summer we assume this is packed with rock climbers and hikers on a Sunday afternoon. Wasn't expecting such a hard climb up the rim of the slabs but lots of boulders and wet leaves. When we got to the top we realized it was better not to go back down that way and did the 2 mile walk around of trail and mostly dirt road along the Housatonic River.

I’m going to give the couch to 5k thing a try. Couch isn’t true as I already do a lot of exercise, I just don’t run. I really loathe running, so I’m interested to see how long I keep it up.

My recent activity includes the 200km Tour du Mont Blanc which was spectacular - I'd really like to post some pics when I get a chance - and training for an upcoming 70km trail run which I'm kind of dreading as I don't feel at all prepared and it's still way too hot here for such long distances over some very big hills. We'll see how that one goes, it's on the 26th of October.

Managed my first 10k in a few weeks yesterday and my first sub 31 min 5k the day before as my hamstrings finally start recovering.
No one told me about hamstrings, they are fuckers.

I never used to have to bother about stretches but now I need to warm my legs up for 5 mins before every run

I have bought a roller for leg massages post run for when I get home.

Looking forward to nice long cross countries in my new Brooks' mud plugger running shoes with deep tread

The older you get the more stretching you need, before and after.....and during too on the very long runs.

A roller is a good idea.

I suppose you have to have something go wrong before you realise it can go wrong, I'd never felt a hamstring before even when I was playing rugby, but then I was young and more bouncy I suppose.

My partner said I was overdoing it, and she helps run a running club; I was over 50k a week and 3 circuit training hours as well with multiple deep and explosive squats when it went twang, but it appears to be sorting itself out now after a 4 -6 week period where it was quite painful to run.

I think I will can the explosive jumping exercises, I don't need them at my age, but I found that deep slow squats really helped in sorting it out.

I am still not running pain free but there is light at the end of the tunnel and I think I will do again now. But keeping it below 40k a week from now on and having a rest day each week

well I completed my 70km race with 8minutes to spare before the 17.5hr cut off. There was 3600m of elevation on the trail with 90% in the first 35km and it was a hot sunny day with temps close to 30 degrees, so by the time I reached the flattish sections I was too buggered to keep up any pace. I had to really speed up in the last 20km though to beat that cut off. With a 50% Did Not Finish rate out of nearly 600 runners I am pleased to have just made it over the finish line in time but it was a hell of a tough race and it highlighted my drop in stamina levels this year.
