So I'm a die-hard XP-user who is not impressed by Microsoft's decision to quit updating this aged OS. Windows 8 is not going to work on my computer because this carcass is 12 years old and only has 512MB RAM. I'm not intending to buy a new one so I'm looking for an alternative...
I read this article online:

Not sure if anyone can help me but is this a viable alternative for XP?

Minimum requirements of at least 1GB RAM, for a start.Underwater wrote:What's wrong with Windows 7?

Re: Linux Ubuntu?
I tried to use Ubuntu a few years ago. I had to download stuff then burn it to a CD. The CD was then used as a boot up disc for installing Ubuntu and was to be used only for that. In practice, every time I tried to use Ubuntu, it asked for the boot up disc. It was a pain in the arse and I eventually stopped using it.
It might be easier now.

Maart, did you take this any further? How did you get on?
Must admit that there are a couple of other 'flavours' of linux I would suggest before Ubuntu, like Mint or Mangeia or Manjaro. Or even Puppy.

I still am overseas and won't be back until May 10 but, from what I read here and elsewhere Linux Mint may be the way to go. I will definitely give that a spin before Ubuntu.

Re: Linux Ubuntu?
Well, I use Mint and have done so for a few years now. I am happy with it and they do tend to keep it pretty simple and straightforward (as I see it anyway!!)
Good luck whichever route you choose
