It would be extremely easy to come up with a list of five Kinks songs and convince myself that they were my five favorite songs of all time by anybody.

I agree, Todd.

Last time I saw Ray, he opened with "This Is...", and...the standard was seldom lowered.

Death of a Clown
Village Green title track
Tired of Waiting for You

... maybe. I felt less certain with these than the James Brown and Beach Boys picks. I know that neither of the two overdriven early ones would feature - both boring to my ears these days. 'Waterloo Sunset' and 'Sunny Afternoon' are huge, though I'm not so sure how much I enjoy them these days. The above three all hit a very sweet spot - though lately I've been coming round to 'Days', which I found a bit two-dimensional for a long time.

I'm not the biggest Kinks fan, to be honest.

The Mod top three! I could go for those, too. 'See My Friend' especially.

God, I love that period of period of the Kinks leading up to (and including) Village Green Preservation Society. Especially during the Face to Face period where Ray Davies was on such a hot streak that he wilfully tucked away many of his finest songs on B-sides, for christ sakes. Anyway, feasibly, I could have picked about 20 from that 1964-68 period, but these three are fine.

See My Friend
I'm Not Like Anybody Else
This is Where I Belong

...all of which reflect great examples of different parts of the Kinks' Kraft [sic]- one hazy and almost cataonic, one furious and defiant, one nostalgic and yet somehow hopeful, the sound of a man comfortable where he is. That it would eventually sour into cussed conservatism shouldn't detract us from how good he was.
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.

Waterloo Sunset is by quite a long way their best track.

has anyone heard the Kinks Choral collection from last year? Ray Davies performing Kinks numbers with a choir. Some of it works very nicely.

Not heard it, although I have to say I wasn't moved to buy it - it sounds shit in theory.

I'd be interested to her it, but I'm not shelling out for it.

it's not worth buying. 4 or 5 tracks work well but you'd not want to play them very often.
