Prince - early records

Postby Limpin' Jez McKenzie » 16 Jul 2022, 13:15

So for some reason I do not own Prince’s first four albums - For you, Prince, Dirty Mind, Controversy.

The first Prince album to blow my mind was Sign o the times, though by then I knew the big songs from 1999, Purple Rain, Around the world…. And Parade.

I have about three quarters of everything else up to 2016. I think I am missing Lovesexy and the symbol one, and The Rainbow Children; and I think a few were digital only releases.

Are all the first four essential? Which are essential?
How complete is your Prince collection?
I kept thinking "swim as far as you can, swim as far as you can".

Digitally I have every note he ever released
On discs now I only have 1999 through to Lovesexy
The first two are alright but Dirty Mind is the pick of the early ones. Controversy is worth a punt too.
After the turn of the 90s he is hit and miss but there is usually some value in everything.

All of the eighties records are pretty much must-owns, with Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain, and Sign of the Times being compulsory.

My own favorite (cover and lack of track indexing notwithstanding) is Lovesexy. I might be alone in that.

'Controversy' is my second favorite Prince album.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?
