The real stinker is Mule Variations where Tom seemed to have descended into self parody. I never bothered with him after that.

Is not every Tom Waits album a descent into self parody?

Well, he's a performance artist for sure. He plays a character and has written countless of wonderful songs around it. Call it what you want, but I can't think of a bad album by him right up to Real Gone. However, I saw him live once (for way too much money, but it was on the bucket list, so what do you do...) and I didn't enjoy his performance nearly as much as his studio albums. Don't care much for his live albums either, except for Nighthawks (and similar boots recorded around the same time).

There are a number of ripoffs on the album as I mentioned earlier.

Deep Purple, Zappa for a start

Intentional. What’s wrong with that?

Absolutely nothing wrong with ripping other tunes off ... unless it makes you realise that the Neil track is way inferior ...again and again and again :D

People, including my kid brother, keep telling me Barn is at least as good as Toast.

Of course this is not true. The Barn compositions are nowhere near as strong.

Are they....?

Well ... as you know I don't like Toast. But I did plod through it twice. I only got as far as halfway with Barn. The songs are unmemorable and Neil's voice seems to have gone all Mark E Smith ...and not in a good way!
Toast wins this round.

I prefer Barn over Toast by a pretty long way. I think it's a bit about with version of Shakey you like. I like the down & dirty stuff. I played both albums (and Noise & Flowers, or whatever it's called) during my mini-road trip to Freeport TX and back, I had to skip through some of the songs on Toast, especially that Redbone-ish tune and Boom. I really can't understand how anybody could listen to those tunes for more than 2 minutes.

But of course I'm wrong and so are all the other Toast-critics: I read the reviews in Mojo and Uncut last weekend, and both seem to consider it a minor masterpiece. After reading these I just had to listen to it again. Apparently Carlson knows what he's talking about, and I sure don't.

We must beg to differ my learned friend but my poor old cloth ears just don't hear that

Most of the Barn songs are weak by comparison

Yes, weak by comparison

John, you reckon he's ever written an album with only good songs?
The answer is no.

The amazing thing about Toast is that there's not even one good song on it, which must be a first.
