So doI
There re an abundance of excellent tracks on the album
The title track is a little tiresome now but that's due to over exposure

Gosh, if you say so. I say there are a few okay-ish musical ideas hamstrung by rubbish lyrics; the bulk of it is just poor all 'round. "Salamander" is probably the best thing on it (not counting the gatefold comic), and had it transpired during the WarChild or Minstrel sessions I suspect it would have been left in the can.

Fair points Chas.
Having looked at the track listing I may have ben a bit over-enthusiastic...!
I think I rate this though:
[Yes I do!]

Benefit is one of my favorite JT albums. The depth of things like "Inside" (maybe their greatest track), "For Michael Collins...", "Son", and "Alive and Well..." make it very special indeed. Anderson was rarely this real.
Something happened during/after Minstrel. They became an image of an image. The cartoon album was witness to that.

I just listened to it all the way through and I don't like it at all. The drumming and the bass playing seem quite good (so, of course, they sacked the bass player straight after for being too rock 'n' roll) and the musicianship seems generally good, but I don't like the songs. I was mildly enjoying the opening track and worrying that I might actually find myself enjoying a prog album but then they threw in a gratuitous and grating key change and normality was restored.
The yodelling codpiece/nasal sneering style of singing isn't my cup of tea but it's not as obnoxious as Richard Thompson, and some of the harmonies are quite nice. In fact, there are nice bits here and there; they just ruin them with lots of crap bits. I reckon you could distill this into a decent single if you put al the good bits into one song.
Even make it a double A-side because ....

I actually like the track Inside and have put it into a Spotify playlist.
Not a great return from listening to the whole album but better than I might have expected.
Bugger off.

Great guitarist and some great songs but he needs someone else to sing them.

Clearly, it is all a matter of taste, I like his voice and his guitar playing is peerless. His voice accompanies his unique guitar playing and the type of music he plays perfectly I think.

Well, that's it, isn't it. You clearly know and love your music and you like his voice. I don't get it.
I actually would like to like him because I fucking love some of his guitar playing and I Want to See the Bright Lights is an all time favourite recording but his voice sets my teeth on edge.
Curious that different people should hear the same thing so differently.
Bugger off.

So you are biased right from the start and it’s difficult, if not impossible, to see through that bias. Don’t get me wrong I feel the same about music I don’t like. It’s too hard to filter the bias, you cannot be open minded even if you try to persuade yourself that you are. If you don’t like prog that’s fine. There are genres of music I don’t like and I know I’m not going to waste my time trying, life is too short. So well done for trying but it was never going to be, no need to try again.

I think Ian Anderson has a human, introverted side that we see all too rarely. Usually it's masked by observations and criticisms of those around him. More and more, the introverted part is the real thing I enjoy with him. There was a few-albums period where this was present, then gone forever. If you're curious, there's some similar stuff on Stand Up ("Reasons for Waiting" "Back to the Family" "Look into the Sun") and the Living in the Past comp ("Wond'ring Again"), though the latter is two albums to listen to for perhaps only a couple things you might like!
IMO

Try side 3 of Living in the Past, Tym!
