Not just for the Benefit of prog goons...

Postby C » 02 Jul 2022, 14:30

This is an adorable album - full off music and so much for everybody

I reckon there's even something in there forThe Fish too...!

As our dear friend Rob states: file under progressive

Let’s talk about the Byrds some more…..
I kept thinking "swim as far as you can, swim as far as you can".

An excellent album C. but you can't change the mind of those who don't want to change their mind.

It's the Tull album I played the least.

It sits uncomfortably between This Was and Aqualung both 5 star quality.

No really memorable songs.

As does Stand Up.

I suppose I was just offering opportunity into looking at some of those songs that may or may not be memorable.

Every Tull album up through TAAB is commercial enough for non-prog ears.

For years it was my favorite Tull album, and I think it probably still is. Others have spells of being played more (particularly Stand Up, TAAB and APP), but Benefit speaks to my soul in a particular way that no other album does. (Not a fan of "Sossity", though!)

Certainly in my top 5 Tull albums. Rate it higher than Aqualung. Having said that, I also love Minstrel, to many cries of derision

Let's just say, it rarely features highly in the "Best of Tull" lists

It's not in my top 5 of JT albums, and neither is it in Mr. Anderson's.
Simply doesn't weigh up against the first two and half of Aqualung.
Much better than TAAB though, but that's stating the obvious.

Of the three mid '70s JT LPs, it's clearly the best to these ears.

Matt, are you saying that you think Minstrel is better than Passion Play and War Child? Or are you referring to Too old... and Songs...
Mid 70's is a bit of a wide margin, for me :-)

I'd like to add: whatever they were feeding the lads at the Chateau d'Isaster, it helped them create their best stuff, I think.

Yeah, aside from "Cold Wind To Valhalla" (and "Summerday Sands" if we'll allow that), I don't love it or even like it much.

But I haven't ruled out the possibility that it might one day "click" for me. Whereas I've given up holding out any such hopes for TOTR'N'R:TYTD!

It's a bag of shite, to be honest. I own it, but I'm not proud to admit it
