Re: Queen - thoughts?
I don't believe a word of Cheifwhat's lengthy response.
I was 15 when Night at the Opera came out. I didn't care for it much (I was big time into Zappa, Floyd, Free and Deep Purple), but I remember lots of girls in my classes liked it. So I bought it with money from my newspaper rounds and I'm forever grateful to Freddy and the other ladies because the album brought me lots of carnal pleasure, as did the albums by Julien Clerc and Peter Frampton.
Early Queen still is not bad, sometimes good, but nothing better than what Mud, The Sweet or, Slade dished out.
I moved to Singapore in 1983 to work. Somewhere in 1984 I visited Rotterdam on R&R. I saw on the TV a Moustachioed Mercury with a hoover and in a dress singing something about freedom. Never paid attention to them again after that.
In The Netherlands there's a so-called Top-2000 on the radio, Anybody can vote on the songs they like most, ever. It was introduced in 2000 and it's become a yearly event, nearly a ritual: from Midnight Dec. 25th until Midnight Dec 31st they play these 2000 songs non-stop, in order. I believe there've been two exceptions (Hotel California and a song by some Dutch artist) but apart from that BH has been the most popular song, ever, every year, amongst Dutch radio listeners. I think somebody should start a Bohemian Rapsody thread. It's a pop classic, a cult classic, one of the 5 songs most copied by Philippino bar bands (number one is STILL Sukiyaki, which is amazing and maybe a bit scary), and with incomprehensible lyrics (or is it??)

We had a similar thing in San Diego in the '70s/'80s with rock station KGB FM, except it was nowhere near 2000 songs (probably 100), and they didn't play them starting on Christmas. "Stairway to Heaven" would win every year - even well into the eighties if memory serves. The top ten were almost strictly Zeppelin and Floyd songs one year. Shows you the mindset of people I grew up with.

Re: Queen - thoughts?
That NPO RadioTop 2000 in The Netherlands has developed in more than just a list. In the beginning it was a relatively small event, and I think for the first 5 years Bohemian Rapsody, Child In Time and Stairway to Heaven formed the top 3, with Hotel California always close by. Zep en DP are no longer in the top 10, these days. Millions of people vote and not only listen, but participate. There are Top 2000 parties, events, TV programs etc. etc. These days it reflects the sentiments and emotions of the people. for example (I didn't know this but did a bit of googling) Imagine by John Lennon was top song in 2015, coming out of nowhere. This was a result of the terrorist attacks on Paris, after which a German pianist played the song at several venues in Paris as a memorial. People voted for the song to make a statement, not because it was their favorite. In 2016 Heroes went for #60 to #7. This year Whiter Shade of Pale was #3. The reason: it was the favorite song of a popular Dutch crime-journalist who got shot. And Radar Love rose a few hundred spots to enter the Top-10, because the band had broken up after the announcement that their guitarist and founding member George Kooijmans had ALS. Until 2018 the Beatles had by far the most songs in the list, with the Stones as close second. Every year Queen got a bit closer, and as from 2018 they have the most songs in the list, with the Beatles as #2. The Stones have fallen to 5th spot, just after Abba. So it's quite a living list, which to me makes it a bit interesting. Since this is a Queen thread, these are their songs in the list. The last number is the chart #:

We’ve had a couple over the years. They very quickly descend into hate it or love it.
A couple of years ago we did a “bcb fave Queen tracks”. BH was number 1, but Brighton Rock came in third. I keep asking those “fave tracks” threads to be put in classic threads so they are not say to access, but no-one ever does it.

Also as well as Wayne’s world and live aid, you can’t ignore the huge success of that nonsensical “musical” which has embedded these songs in people’s minds. That said, the first volume of greatest hits (their pre-1981 singles) has always been a huge seller since its release.

I started one on Under Pressure - a much more interesting song than Bohemian Rhapsody all these years later.

Pretty similar here.Jimbly wrote:I love the first 4, like the 5th and then singles then on.
Somebody's father had an early VCR recorder, through his work if I recall, and our school pal had a recording of Bohemian Rhapsody so there were numerous visitors to her home.Jimbly wrote:They were enormous in my school from Queen ll onwards.

WOULDN'T CHANGE A NOTE
Sheer Heart Attack
A Night at the Opera
Queen II
A Day at the Races
EXCELLENT
News of the World
Queen
GOOD ALBUMS
Jazz
The Game
I don't care for too much after that, but I listened to Hot Space the other day and could get into it. Interestingly, I enjoyed Freddie and John's dance music stuff more than Roger and Brian's more rawk-oriented approach.

Love the first six, like the next few, have very little interest in all the ones after that bar some scattered moments. Shame they turned from an all over the place/try anything once band to a commercial band with a 'sound', but it happens to them all eventually.
There's a certain sort of 'Noel Coward Rock' thing that they do that's kind of 100% theirs - can't think of a similar hit to "Killer Queen" in this century or last - but it's the fact that they could do a credible job in such a variety of styles, plus the fact that they had four capable songwriters - though Roger Taylor only had the occasional success to my ear - that makes them - dare I say it? The Beatles of the 70s. Well kinda.
From age 13 to 17 or so, they were the greatest band ever. Then I went off them. Now I appreciate them a great deal. I certainly don't need to listen to them much, it's all embedded in my brain - but I can still enjoy them a lot when I do.
