Love Hurts

Postby GoogaMooga » 09 May 2022, 22:32

Love Hurts by Nazareth was written by Boudleaux Bryant and was first recorded and released by The Everly Brothers in 1960. Love Hurts, but which one?

Everlys for me, though if I were allowed a second vote it would go to Gram'n'Emmy.

I liked the version by Jim Capaldi, Everley's version is nice too.

I voted for Roy Orbison because I always vote for Roy Orbison when I get the chance.

In fact, I think he isn't right for this song. When he sings, 'I'm young, I know, but even so' it really grates because Roy Orbison was never young.

Terrific song though. Hard to do it badly.
Bugger off.

Jim Capaldi here too
It needs to be uptempoed - it is a dirge otherwise.

I hate it in every iteration.
But if I must hear it, then it might as well be the Everlys.

The first three you've listed are good, I can't remember hearing Cher's version (although I'm quite the fan of a lot of her singles, and the Nazareth is the usual dogshit from that band.
The lyrics are poor for the Bryants, but the tune and the sentiment are perfect for anyone with a bit of yearning in their voice. I voted for Emmy-Lou and the Junkie, but could just as easily have been Roy or the Evs.
Speeding it up, Jim fucking Capaldi, all of that, just fuck off.

Of course, the lyrics are lame, but that's irrelevant. G&E's harmonies are magical on virtually all their songs, including this one.
Capaldi should have been imprisoned for his disco version of the song.

Glad I never heard Capaldi's.

Surprised at you Googa, condemning something before you've heard it, it's a damn fine record.

Well, I wouldn't always do that, but based on what I have read in this thread and my familiarity with the ballad versions, I don't think a sped-up, discofied version would be good. It's like The Beach Boys' "Here Comes the Night", then. I like disco a lot, but I don't think it is suitable for this song.

It's the epitome of the golden age of pop music. I think David Soul would have been a better vehicle for this abomination. Jim was in Traffic, for crying out loud! That was a half-decent band. Check out the Youtube clip. It will make you wish you had Alzheimer's, for a minute or two.

I know Capaldi was in Traffic. I don't like Traffic.

I prefer the Jim Capaldi version.
It's the first one I heard - a Top10 hit from my schooldays. Only heard the earlier Nazareth version later, probably when it was rereleased as the lead track on an EP in 1977 and picked up a bit of radio play. Preferred that one for a while, but these days it's Jim Capaldi's rather fine pop treatment that I like the most.

BTW According to Wikipedia Cher has recorded it twice. Once in 1975, and again in 1991 when it became the title track of an LP. Can't say I remember hearing either one though.
