Agreed - it was more tongue in cheek - Ian Hislop style.....!

Great piano

Let's remember - Martyn was not a nice man (allegedly).

But notwithstanding the music is fantastic

Sadly, don't think it's allegedly.

He came up in a conversation I had with Steve Tilston, who toured as support to Martyn in '77 or '78 (I saw them at Reading Uni on that tour). Steve said something like "I started the tour as a huge fan, by the end of it I couldn't stand the man. Absolutely vile."

yeah, mr. young mentioned it too

it's always kinda hard for me to understand people who are clearly so talented. inspired musically, and they can turn around and be such fucquers.

edit: that would be mr. jung. i cannot spell today, mwhahaha. and i just poured my first beverage. i blame all the chainsaws outside

"Johnny Too Bad"

Let's ROCK!

Martyn's guitar - acoustic and electric is delightful

Looking On - keyboards rather Herbie Hancock/Joe Zawinulesque Miles early 70s period. With that rubbery bass, almost like Weather Report with vocals.

For those, like me, that weren't aware

The song "Johnny Too Bad" was written by Trevor "Batman" Wilson, Winston Bailey, Roy Beckford and Derrick Crooks, all at some time members of The Slickers. The song featured on the soundtrack for the 1972 Jimmy Cliff film, The Harder They Come, and later covered by the British reggae group UB40, the American reggae punk band Sublime, American power pop band The Silencers (1980, Columbia Records),and blues artist Taj Mahal. John Martyn covered it with additional lyrics on his 1980 album Grace and Danger. The song was also part of bluegrass artist Peter Rowan's live repertoire during much of the mid-1980s.

Thanks Les - I've heard the UB40 version

A few of these sound like they could’ve been on a Collins solo album.

Have got the Slickers and Taj Mahal versions, seen Peter Rowan play it, not heard UB40's version. The Slickers is the tops for me!

Interesting, or is it, that his children use John's real surname: McGeachy

Bassist John Giblin was roughly the same age as Jaco Pastorius, and I believe his career in fact took off first. Giblin no doubt came to this album via Phil Collins, his Brand X bandmate.

Giblin has played with Eric Clapton, David Sylvian, Chris De Burgh, George Martin, Mark Knopfler (he is in the Dire Straits tribute/revival band), Sting, and Kate Bush - I saw him live during her Before The Dawn Shows. He also has a project with Weather Report's Pete Erskine.
