Britpop anthems

Has there been any rock scene of note since Britpop? Isn't it the case that the last really creative burst in British rock was that explosion of talent in the nineties called Britpop? Peaking in 1995-1996, with Blur and Oasis in the vanguard playing off the old Beatles-Stones rivalry, the enormous success of Britpop recalled the mid-sixties and Swinging London. It set forth a wave of optimism which was quickly dubbed 'Cool Britannia'. Even Tony Blair would seize the opportunity to invite Noel Gallagher to Downing Street for a photo-op. While many of the lower-reaching chart hits are largely forgotten now, I still think it should be possible to name at least a few anthems that have an impact today:

Live Forever
Wonderwall
Don't Look Back in Anger
Supersonic
This is a Low
To the End
The Universal
Common People
Animal Nitrate

I don't know about having an impact now but I think there were many good songs that came out of that moment in time which I still like to listen to today. Wouldn't necessarily want to have an album by some of the bands but some individual songs were great.

There She Goes
Walkaway
Finetime
Stupid Girl
Riverboat Song
Day We Caught The Train
Sit Down
All You Good People
Mulder and Scully
Roadrage
Loaded
North Country Boy
Tattva

I can think of many more and this list doesn't even include some of the big acts of the time.

And "Finetime" - isn't that by Cast?

Yes, that's right, and 'Walkaway' always reminds me of the England defeat in the 1996 Euros' semi-final v Germany, the BBC played it as the finale to their coverage.

Just had a look at that, seems to have a number of odd ones on there. In fairness it doesn't state Britpop on the box.

I just picked one out. There's plenty of Britpop compilations out there.

The first album by Cast har got "Finetime" and a few other memorable songs. I wasn't expecting another La's. I may also have the second album in the archives, but I don't remember anything from that one. And after that, they called it a day. Wonder what became of Lee Mavers.

Agreed. Awful band. As were Shed 7, Embrace, Sleeper, OCS, Echobelly, the Seahorses....God, the list is endless. We know who the big hitters are but this lot couldn't punch their way out of a paper bag

Saw Embrace live, they were pretty good.

Typical comments by the Uk BCB board members that by the late 90's were repulsed by the whole britpop scene and post britpop scene except for a handful of songs. I've got to admit I'm a little mixed up with what is considered britpop and what is not. As a big fan of several of these bands its easy to come up with the anthem hits
pre- Britpop
Stone Roses- I Wanna Be Adored/I am the resurrection
The La's - There she goes

Britpop
Oasis -Live Forever, supersonic
Blur- Advert,Song 2
Supergrass- Caught by the Fuzz
The Verve- Bitter Sweet, She's a Superstar
The Charlatans- The only One I Know
Super Furry Animals - The man don't give a F*ck
Kular Shaker - Govinda
Placebo- Without you I'm nothing
Lush - Ladykillers
Pulp- Common People, Disco 2000

Post Britpop
Snow Patrol - Starfighter Pilot
Doves/Sub Sub - Space Face, Catch the Sun, There goes the fear
Elbow- Leaders of the Free World/Newborn
Idlewild- You held the world in your arms
The Editors - Munich
Bloc Party-Helicopter
Starsailor-silence is easy, Love is here
EMbrace- Ashes

Pulp, Blur, Supergrass, Oasis, and Suede (altho' some say they came too early to be regarded as 'real' Britpop, whatever that means) all put out some magnificent tunes between 1993 and 1995. To my mind, between them they were responsible for the very best of the genre, and there weren't really too many 'nuggets' from lesser bands, but I'd fly a flag for the following:

Inbetweener - Sleeper
Wake Up Boo! - Boo Radleys
Disco Down - Shed Seven
Insomniac - Echobelly
Connection - Elastica
Be My Light, Be My Guide - Gene

I do think the period marked the last hoorah for great British pop music, even tho' you get a lot of bullshit these days about how 'damaging' the scene was, how 'backward-looking' etc. I mean, theoretically maybe that's true. But when you have songs like 'Babies', 'Caught By The Fuzz', 'Live Forever' and 'Animal Nitrate', who cares what some bitter old hacks have to say about it 25 years on?
