On par with Randy Newman, Texan Lovett is hard to catch in one style. Is it Country? Is it Bigband? It's all of this and more.
Also sharp and witty lyrics and, music wise, he does what he pleases.
If you don't know what Lyle's about start with his 1987 album Pontiac.

Re: Lyle Lovett
I like him more than my collection of his music would indicate. I have his first three I think and no Large Band recordings but I’d go hear him anytime.
I haven’t kept up with him in recent years. His lyrics are great.

Fabulous lyricist, yes, and the rendition is great too. One of the artists (like Randy Newman) I've been faithful to and have collected extensively, but hardly ever listen to anymore. I must change this.
Here's a few faves
(on par with John Prine)
(with the amazing Matt Rollings on piano)
(the Large Band in all their glory)

Re: Lyle Lovett
After years of sitting in the collection they get dragged up and giving a proper listen again.
That's what happens when one has too many records.
Alejandro Escovedo, Garland Jeffries and Joe Ely are probably the next ones to get an outing.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think he’s written much new material (that he has recorded and released).
I basically like him, but feel no urge to listen to his records. Though if I did, it would be the more straight country offerings. I’ve seen his show about a half dozen times and that’s always a great pleasure. He’s very funny.

Re: Lyle Lovett
AllMusic states his last album Release Me dates from 2012. A collection of odds and sods to end his recording contract with Curb.

Me and Mrs Boom used to go see him just about every year at the Bass Hall in Fort Worth when he would regularly play with his Large band. Always a great show, always a great band and extremely funny between song banter guaranteed.
