On the contrary. It's alphabetical. That way I can find what I want to listen to immediately. If I want to listen to ZZ Top I go to the Z's, if I want to hear ZZ Hill I go to the H's, if I want to hear Alice Coltrane I got to the C's.

Where's the Captain Beefheart?

Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band is the name of a band, group, or ensemble, so it is in C, just as Marshall Tucker Band is in M.

Where do you put Elton John?

…and cue bin/as far away as possible from my cd/records jokes

I was in Tokyo when I first got into CD collecting, back in 1990. It is customary in Japan to file under first name, so Elton John would be found under "E". I quickly adapted to that way, and made my notebook entries accordingly. Still do to this day.

First is always 60's garage/psych/freakbeat. There were two good record stores for this in Austin, last time I visited. Next stop is usually the staff picks section, then the general rock section, or world music. Then, I'd probably look through the jazz and metal sections. If I had time or the mood struck me I might also check out the country, hip hop and electronic sections.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

Always Experimental/Avant-garde section first (Vinyl Exhange and Piccadilly records in Manchester have the best selections in the country), then the indie/alternative/punk/post-punk section, which is often an amalgam. Then folk, electronic, or a hopeful browse through the bargain bin.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

How could I forget the bargain bin? Always check out the bargain bin and everything in it.

At one time, Europe's largest secondhand recording store.

Went out of business twelve years ago.

A satellite outpost exists in Beckenham near me, but it is much smaller and overpriced beyond reckoning.
