Soft Cell for me by a mile. Three classic albums and more than a dozen brilliant singles. A perfect catalogue.

That's just silly. They made several excellent albums; obviously they should used more strings and trumpets, but they can't all be James Last.

Anyway, I don't see SM or New Order as specifically synth music. My vote would be Pet Shop Boys followed by Human League and Soft Cell.

Simple Minds are utter garbage.

Nah, just because you think that doesn't make it so.

ya know, googa? there are those times you drive off the road. we all do it, from time to time.

then, there are those times when you drive off the road and right over the cliff.

and thennn, there are those times when you drive off the cliff, in a car on fire, with clowns screaming whilst blaring clown horns all the way down.

cheers.

Why should I? Nobody here ever bothers to explain when they dish it out on my music.

Simple Minds are just a big waste of time. I don't know why I bothered even paying 50 pence for those CD's.

Exactly. Same goes for your opinion. There is no absolute truth when it comes to art. Some people like orchestration, others prefer a simple drum-bass-guitar set-up.

It shouldn't matter what I think. I've got "bad" taste, remember?

Be that as it may, it's interesting when someone says that a band like Simple Minds is "utter garbage," and one would think that someone with such a strong opinion would welcome the invitation to elaborate.

The fact that I owned a number of their albums, all bought for 50 p or less, and only can remember ONE song, is an indication to me, at least, that I am wasting my time with them. Melody/hits are not the sole criterion, but I feel their tuneless songs are dressed up as bombast to hide their lack of good compositions and strong hooks. There are many names dropped here which we can agree on, so I don't really want to knock anyone's taste, I was just testing how you guys would react.

Well, I couldn't name a single Simple Minds song off the top of my head (though I'm sure I would recognize every note of a handful), so I'm just a bystander!

Great band, I could have sworn I levitated at the Wembley Mandela concert in 88 during Waterfront, but it could have been the Sensimilla.

Regarding Simple Minds
from 1979 to 1982 they released five classic albums (the first one is also good, but not in the same league as the others)
then with 1984s Sparkle In The Rain, they lost the plot with their take on U2 stadium rock.
But these are true classics
Real to Real Cacophony
Empires and Dance
Sons and Fascination
Sister Feelings Call
New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84)

Yes indeed, thanks Conny. I basically agree with you word for word, though i still have a nostalgic soft spot for a few of their later 80s songs from Sparkle in the Rain and Once Upon a Time. They were a quite singular band in their early years.

Wonderful tune. And the album it's from is a beauty, Sons and Fascination. I was just talking about it with Trans-Chigley Ray actually, because he mentioned he was surprised that i'd picked a Steve Hillage tune for the Prog Cup, and i told him i first heard of Hillage as a teen when i got S&F and saw that he had produced it. Been a fan of late 70s Hillage since then too. His sound, often synth heavy but with a spacey, funky groove, suited SM very much.
