Depeche Mode
I've been thinking perhaps to get rid of my Depeche Mode CDs. Aside from "Construction Time Again", they don't really grab me. Depeche Mode is the most enduring of the great synth bands of the 1980s, but I just get more pleasure out of Duran Duran and Ultravox. Or Eurythmics, for that matter. So, what's your take on Depeche Mode?

Yes, that's what I think - too morose and self-important. Why were they so popular, I wonder? I am not hearing any hits that leap at you.

I didn’t mind their first hit, ‘New Life’, but after that, No Thank You.

My fave is "Everything Counts".

The amount wasn’t small enough,, as far as I’m concerned.

I know I've probably mentioned it quite a few times, but the B-Side, "Shout" is fantastic, my favourite of theirs by a long way. Definitely preferred them with Vince than without.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I don’t know if I would bother trying to compare DM with any other ‘80s synth bands’ - they were not as homogenous as they are sometimes lazily described.
‘New Life’ is wonderful and I’ve got ‘Speak and Spell’ on now to remind me whether I really liked that at any point. And it leaves me a bit unmoved. I had ‘A Broken Frame’ as a teenager and got bored of it very quickly. Americans fucking LOVE them though - whenever they play here it’s like God has come to town. Mysterious!

Danes, too. I know one guy who has them as his favorite band.

Thanks, I just took a break. I was a bit miffed at the reception my boogaloo got here, but to each his own, you know.

They have two absolutely monumentally fantastic hits - just can't get enough, and Personal jesus.
The rest does not interest me (though I have fond memories of hearing See you in proto-romantic situations).

I’m VERY happy to have my mind changed about them, but the above doesn’t do it.
