The coolest album I have ever heard (and that's saying a lot!)

Postby GoogaMooga » 13 May 2021, 05:53

***THE COOLEST ALBUM IN THE KNOWN UNIVERSE***

Call it Latin Soul, Boogaloo, or Shing-a-Ling, it's no secret that I am madly in love with the good time groove of Mr. New York, the estimable Joe Bataan! He competes with Pete Rodriguez for the title of "King of Latin Soul", and I think he wins out, being more prolific, more soulful, and more groovacious! No wonder he was the main man of the recent documentary, "We Like It Like That", which was released on DVD, Region 1 only! He is also the great survivor of the Boogaloo scene, and in 2009 he recorded a terrific album for the Spanish label, Vampisoul. Imagine, in 2009, a new album full of excellent hardcore Latin Soul! On this corker of an album, Joe revisits and revamps some of his most beloved anthems as well as some more obscure numbers. He is joined by Barcelona-based funk group Los Fulanos. Salsoul indeed!

God you love some dreadful shit.
Do you save it ALL for here ? You are strangely more coherent on the beach boys forum you liked to contribute too.

Fucking hell. I thought to myself that I can't actually be rude about this unless I actually listen to it. Well, I've listened to it so now I can be rude.

I have no idea what he was like when he was a young man but the out of tune warbling I just heard was horrible. Literally the worst singing I've heard since I listened to a recording of myself singing live. Maybe even worse.

I get that there's no accounting for taste but why would anyone want to listen to this?

Can't you find a forum where people like this sort of thing, and talk about it there?
Bugger off.

There are only two types of music my friends:

Music you like and music you don't like

You'll be telling me next that Lee Jackson can't sing

The problem with Lee Jackson is not so much that he can't sing.

It is that he will sing.

A post of mine seems to have disappeared. Anyway I just wanted to say Joe Bataan is a highly respected artist, a fixture of the rare groove/Latin Soul scene I grew up on. No idea on his latest album, I thought he was long gone, but 70s stuff is well worth checking out.

I recognised 'Subway Joe', although not that version.

I was pleased to recall it was on an NME compilation I have not owned for thirty years:

Well worth a listen to those vid links

Fair enough, but if this is anything to go on, his voice has well and truly gone:

Yeah. Like some of the other old boys he's lost it a bit.

Not bad for 75 [in 2018]

But the gravel is still there though - awesome!

Thanks for posting Chris
