Starting from the bottom:

The Cage
The bitch is back
I think I'm going to kill myself
Two rooms at the end of the world
Sad songs say so much
Out of the blue
Blue eyes
Cool as Christmas
Bad side of the moon
Medley (yell help/wednesday night/ugly)
Friends
We all fall in love sometimes
Country comfort
Dan Dare
Feed me
Hercules
Texan love song
My father's gun
Son of your father
Madness
Come down in time
The king must die
Strangers
I'm going to be a teenage idol

All the girls love Alice
Between 17 and 20
Love song
The greatest discovery
Western Ford Gateway
One horse town
I've seen the saucers
Little Jeannie
Don't go breaking my heart
Sacrifice
Are you ready for love?
Shoulder holster
Chameleon
This song has no title
Rock me when he's gone

Inevitable, I thought. But I am amazed at half the top ten.

I really should have had this on my list. I was listening to Capt Fantastic yesterday and was wondering why the hell I didn't include it.

I was pleasantly surprised to see these two favorites of mine in the top ten. I love both versions of Madman but the eventual album version is my preference.

This thread deserves some commentary at least.
Listening to the Elton I have, and its entirely what might be called the golden period, it strikes me that the quality of the songwriting is sometimes overshadowed by the inclusion of quite a lot of filler in all of the albums. But, the good songs really are stellar. He has the emotional depth and ability to express that in melody, allied with Taupins mostly simple, but evocative lyrics that draw me in, particularly when dealing with Western themes. The absolute zenith of his talent comes when dealing with personal issues and causes close to him. Something like Ticking, written in '74 is still prescient today.
He could, and probably still may, be able to throw off a stonking pop tune, but I'm not interested in later period Elton.
I'll come back to this.
