Favorite film scores?

Postby GoogaMooga » 07 Apr 2021, 05:44

Not quite classical, not quite pop either, film scores are a wonderful hybrid beast that can really move you, with or without the images. Last night I streamed one of a series of film concerts held at the DR (Danmarks Radio) concert hall, the best in Denmark, where I once saw Emmylou Harris and also my final concert ever, Burt Bacharach. One of the six concerts was a tribute to the great composers, Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone. It was a magnificent experience, and for the Dollar themes, one that featured the most unusual instruments, in addition to a choir and the 100 man strong orchestra. Available on DVD, I have learnt, and one that gets my highest recommendation.

I have quite a number of film scores. There are box sets of jazz film scores by a label called moochin' about - I have about six of thse sets, all with 10 or 12 soundtracks on them, and I have many more besides. The score to the pixar film Coco is tremendous.

However my two faves are probably Francis Lai's score Un homme et une femme, and Michel Legrand's stunning Les parapluies de Cherbourg.

Those Francis Lai scores are classics. When Lai was scoring Cherbourg for Jacques Demy, Demy would tell him, "More handkerchiefs!"

If we're including TV scoring, Laurie Johnson did some magical work, particularly for The Avengers.

And over the last year (as discussed elsewhere on these boards), I've been re-watching (and re-re-watching) all the old Columbo episodes; they used a number of different composers, but there's one in particular who always makes my ears perk up - Billy Goldenberg. Whenever I'm watching one that he did, I always know it's him. If they released his Columbo scores on CD, I'd snap 'em up in a heartbeat. (I did very recently buy a CD of a movie score he did - Busting, which I've never seen - but haven't gotten around to playing it yet.)

I liked John Barry's score for The Knack quite a bit. In fact, I'd include practically everything by Barry. Or Morricone. Or Mancini.

Things that a fella can't forget...

I meant to mention Mancini. Even when the movie wasn't very good, his score typically was.

"Hatari!" was really great, both movie and OST.

Roy Budd’s Get Carter score takes a lot b of beating.
The version of the main theme (without train noises) is as good as it gets.
I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.
