Something Else (1970-1971 US music show)

Postby zoomboogity » 08 Sep 2012, 08:38

Watching a Byrds video comp with a couple Flying Burrito Brothers songs tacked at the end, I just found out that one of them is from a music show called Something Else. It was syndicated in 1970-1971, and John Byner (and later John Hartford) was the host. This one completely passed me by, although I may have seen an episode when I was a kid and the tv was on the room. (I know there were music shows, I know John Byner used to be on tv on lot, but now it all blends into one big media porridge.)

I found an episode list at this yahoo group, to which I added line breaks for readability. Also, there may be a more complete list elsewhere in that group. And pardon the caps lock - I'm not "yelling," it's a copy-and-paste, and the thought of retyping it is just too gruesome.

Do you know if the tapes have survived? So many cult artists on there!

I don't know if that first link I posted has them for sale or what, I didn't look very carefully. The folks at the yahoo group (also linked above) seem to have done some trading, so at least some of it does. A search on youtube shows that a number of clips do survive.

I can't imagine that the show was broadcast in Los Angeles. I, or someone I know, would have been aware of it and I certainly would have watched it had it been available. I'd love to see a DVD set of it right now.

If I'm not mistaken, that "Research Video" company is a guy that was crashing on Dean's couch at one point in the 90s. He had lots of 3/4 inch tapes and film cannisters, and yes, he would sell you stuff but not your run of the mill bootlegger. We're talking broadcast-quality copies for like thousands of dollars a minute. VH1 was a regular customer, as were documentary studios. There are companies who really really needed a few minutes of footage of this or that obscure artist, and he was often the only guy that had it.

I was over there when he was making timecoded VHS copies of segments to send out, and it was often fascinating - he had stuff no one else did, in perfect quality. But it was luck of the draw whether he'd be transferring a Who concert or a Carpenters concert when I went over.

That's funny, zoom - I almost started a thread on this show just a month or so ago! Don't remember why I didn't.

I thought those Emmit Rhodes clips were from this... ?

This guy, whom I have bought stuff from before, has a bunch of those shows (click on "Hard To Find Vintage TV Shows And Movies") - don't know what the quality is like, whether they've got timecodes on 'em or what.
