Re: The Prog Premier League - The Final League Table
Thanks for organising that Rob - a great job
I'm happy with the top 20
The only band I am not familiar with is Radiohead.
I have never knowingly heard anything by them
But I am sure they are robust - my loss, I know

That sure is your loss. They've got some fantastic music. Kid A is my favourite, I think.
They're called 'the new Pink Floyd by many. not sure if I can go that far, but it's not entirely ridiculous.

There's a big difference between kneeling down and bending over

Can't believe Kraftwerk didn't make the 20.
Slouches off, great coat flapping in the breeze, trilby pulled down, whistling slightly off tune.

I eventually disregarded electronic and krautrock for my final list though I included them on my initial list. Not sure whether right or wrong but I opted for more strictly Prog kind of acts although it's increasingly hard to define this

Nice job Rob
Glad to see Radiohead, Strawbs and Soft Machine made it all tied.
I could replace the last three but no problem with them.
Biggest problem here in my eyes is the lack of Brian Eno? Odd how because he did so many different things he gets misplaced in prog.
Interesting comment :
"Post-progressive's beginning may be located after 1978.[13] Author Bill Martin argues that Robert Fripp, Bill Laswell, and Peter Gabriel could all be considered transitional figures in post-progressive rock, crediting Brian Eno as the music's most important catalyst, and explaining that his 1973–77 solo albums merged "warped aspects of progressive rock" with "a strange premonition of punk" and "the first approximations of new wave".[14] Additionally, Talking Heads expanded new wave by combining the urgency of punk rock with the sophistication of progressive rock, as Martin writes: "A good deal of the more interesting rock since that time is clearly 'post-Talking Heads' music, but that means it is post-progressive rock as well."[14] After the 1970s, the post-progressive style followed in the traditions of King Crimson's 1981 album Discipline, with its introduction of minimalism and ethnic musics, elements which were new to rock."

Also puzzled too but I've been confused by the thoughts here on both Krautrock and Electronic Music.
Also sad by Gong not making it. I actually think they have more influence on music then some of the other bands on this list.

Interesting project.
I have two albums by Genesis, 6 albums and a comp by Floyd (though hardly their most proggish records), an ELP comp (I only have it for one track), 4 albums by Oldfield (3 of which are called Tubular Bells in some form or other) and a Moodys comp. And the single of Part of the Union by the Strawbs.
Nothing by any of others.
As for Kraftwerk, surely from Autobahn on they are a rock/pop band. I don't know the earlier records so maybe they are prog.

Yes you have. You bought Moon Shaped Pool, said it wasn’t your thing and returned it for a refund. Cloth eared old fool!

Bloody 'ell lad - you've got a better memory than me!
'tis true
I still stand by what I said - I probably turned it off after 30 seconds of track 1.....

I remember it because I love that album and was shocked and disappointed that you didn’t give it a chance. I know it doesn’t sound anything like the music of 1971 but you should have at least given it a couple of proper listens. They’re not so highly rated for nothing you know!
Surely you’ve heard Radiohead’s most popular album The Bends? Maybe you could redeem your tarnished reputation by giving it a go on Qobuz?!

And how can one even mention Discipline and not the Talking Heads in the same sentence?

To add nothing to the debate, here's my brother's mate and his prog ramblings.

I watched nice he included
Tangerine Dream and Soft Machine.
Noticed he stayed away from Pink Floyd and Zappa.
I'll never get the love of Caravan over Gong. Don't get me wrong I love some Caravan but they don't come close to Gong a more complexed and interesting prog band.
