Re: Top 30 Bands of All Time
Nice lists guys
Again, forget looking cool
Here I have just gone for the bands - not artists too - so no Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Rory Gallagher or Miles Davis
Also not all bands I rate very highly were consistent in my eyes (or ears) - Crimso is the obvious, but also Genesis after Wind & Wuthering or Camel after Nude or If after Waterfall [virtually a different band] but in each case there is enough there for me to love them!
Pink Floyd and Yes didn't quite make it....
In no order:
1. Jethro Tull
2. Gentle Giant
3. King Crimson [up to Red]
4. Soft Machine
5. Gong
6. Pixies
7. Fairport Convention
8. Built to Spill
9. Hawkwind
10. Led Zeppelin
11. Steeleye Span
12. Budgie
13. Santana
14. If
15. Kraftwerk
16. The Nice
17. Traffic
18. Tangerine Dream
19. Genesis
20. Groundhogs
21. Frank Zappa & The Mothers
22. Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band
23. Caravan
24. Camel
25. The Allman Brothers
26. Family
27. ZZ Top
28. Lynyrd Skynyrd
29. Man
30. Mountain

Re: Top 30 Bands of All Time
That's what it is with lists, my friend.
Mine SHOULD have included the good Captain B. And I thought about putting in Gong 3 times.
What I find interesting is that you and I aren't so much different, except for a bit of Americana. I had to slow myself down there. If I'd make my list for the 30 best over the past 20 years it would be so different. But nobody would start such a topic.

My list would be different if it were bands only, a lot more rockcentric.

Re: Top 30 Bands of All Time
Okay here goes, these are the bands/acts that have meant the most to me since I became interested in popular music and for the longest possible time, in no particular order.
Stones
Beatles
Who
Kinks
Small Faces
Faces
Rod Stewart
Traffic
John Mayall/Bluebreakers
Fleetwood Mac
Pink Floyd
Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry
Yes
Jethro Tull
David Bowie
Captain Beeefheart
Beach Boys
ELO
Tom Petty/Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
Bryds
Jimi Hendrix
Fairport Convention (first 5 in particular)
CSN/CSN&Y
Doors
Eagles
Steve Miller
Paul McCartney
Led Zeppelin
Radiohead
U2
Okay, cheated a bit with Roxy/Ferry but I don't care.
For many of these, if not all, I have all of their recorded albums and would always want to have them. There are many others though that could have been there: Free, Family, REM, Cure, Yardbirds, Lovin' Spoonful, Neil Young, VU to name just a few. There are also many great bands from later decades that might have slipped in there but they simply haven't meant as much to me and just haven't clicked in the way that the ones above have. From the lists of others posted above I might easily have chosen some of the same bands/artists but avoided the temptation, this is my true list of favourites. Curiously, a list of my very favourite albums might comprise a very different selection of artists.
