RIP Nokie Edwards

Postby Muskrat » 12 Mar 2018, 22:23

So far, the only online source I have is German, but Variety's Chris Morris says so, too. (An infection following hip surgery. He was 82)

Translation by Google.

Ventures guitarist Nokie Edwards is dead
With hits such as "Walk, Do not Run" and "Hawaii Five-O" the Ventures dominated Surf Rock. Now her longtime member Nokie Edwards has died. INGO SALMEN
They have sold more than 100 million albums, instrumental hits like "Walk, Do not Run" and "Hawaii Five-O" have influenced a generation of rock guitarists. The surf music of the Ventures embodied the coolness of the American West Coast. Now a little bit of that lightness has been lost: Nokie Edwards, longtime member of the guitar rock band, died this Monday at the age of 82 years. This was the Tagesspiegel learned from his environment.

Edwards, born May 9, 1935 in Oklahoma, was of Indian descent. In the late 1950s, he joined as a bassist to the Ventures. Later, he took on the role of lead guitarist from Bob Bogle and refined the band's sound with his fingerstyle game inspired by country legend Chet Atkins. Together they stood for the carefree sound of the early 60s. With the theme music of the US series "Hawaii Five-O", they landed a hit again at the end of the decade.

The Ventures experienced a revival when Quentin Tarantino used her piece "Surf Rider" (in a version of Lively Ones) for the soundtrack of "Pulp Fiction". In 2008, they were inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame. Especially in Japan, the band remained popular for decades. Edwards, who had officially dropped out in the mid-80s, was a guest on her Asian tours to old age.

I saw it reported earlier today in a Ventures Facebook group I'm in, and in a surf rock group, as well, though I hadn't seen anything official. Sad to hear it. He was a key part of the classic Ventures run.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

They put out about a record a month for a decade or so at their peak, and they all kick some considerable ass. I became a fan right around the time the shops were more or less giving their second hand Ventures LPs away, and I had more than a few favorites. The Xmas LP is wonderful, and the Live In Japan 1965 record is heavy as hell.

For lack of a better word, they really "dug in".
