Obvious non-smokers who smoke in films

..and why not?

Obvious non-smokers who smoke in films

While have no moral axe to grind with actors who do it (presumably to "inhabit the character"), as a former smoker myself, this looks totally unrealistic and pointless to me. Leonardo Di Caprio in Blood Diamond is a particularly embarrassing example. Anyone else feel the same way

Good topic! I'm a non-smoker, I wouldn't notice any amateur smoking so I'd be interested to hear some examples. Who are good onscreen smokers?

Who's the best smoker on Mad Men ?

Haven't seen it for a while but the way Roger holds his smokes in his hands and drags on them looks pretty convincing

I can't think of any off the top of my head, but it does rankle when actors clearly aren't comfortable holding a cigarette, much less smoking one (or appearing to do so). I'm an ex-smoker, so may it's something more easily spotted.

Anyway, ditto actors pretending to play a musical instrument when they clearly don't even know how to hold the thing or what posture to adopt with respect to it.

Sean Penn was actually pretty good in Sweet and Lowdown in that regard. I think he took pretty hardcore lessons and seemed to have developed a degree of proficiency on the guitar.

You also see this in advertising, with a model holding a guitar awkwardly. I have begun to think that this has maybe turned into a thing itself, that the photographer/art director/whoever now actually wants the model to look awkward with it, to uphold the tradition as it were.

I don't know if Jeff Bridges is a smoker or a former smoker, but if i remember well he never really smokes in "The Big Lebowski".

More recently, Ray Wise in "Dead End" actually smokes. He plays an occasional smoker, suddenly asks his daughter a cigarette, she gives him one, he puts it in his mouth and starts ranting without lightening it. Then, a shot on his daughter, a shot on him. The cigarette is lit, but he doesn"t inhalate. So i say: "oh shit, it's fake", but after a long ranting, he finally takes a long drag. Ahhhhhh...

Yeah, on shows like Mad Men they wave the cigarettes about but rarely take a puff and when they do you can tell they're fakers by the thickness of the smoke. Properly inhaled smoke comes out thin having left all its goodness in the lungs.

She's holding a guitar? Oh yeah, so she is.

the most it ever bothered me was Jane Fondue in a little something called "The Morning After"
JF was America's most visible health guru type at the time so everybody knew she didn't really smoke. well, her character in the film smoked as only an actress famous for being fit and healthy possibly could. it was like watching a little kid's idea of how grown ups acted. pathetic.
