There is a zydeco act on at the Rock and Bowl on Thursday if people are interested?

We were thinking of going tonight, but there is no music on.

Actually, I was hoping to take the group to see the Stooges Brass Band at the Hi-Ho (well, I'll drive - my car seats 7 - but I ain't payin' for y'all), which is about as New Orleans an experience you can get. They're probably the best brass band in town (they're where Trombone Shorty got his start), and the shows are absolutely killer - they'll generally just break it up into three sets, and there are no stops between songs - the band will just drop out, and the drums will keep going, rolling on into the start of the next tune. And you'll get your first glimpse at witnessing buck jumping dance-offs. :) It's very much a locals only thing, it'll get you shaking your rear end, and you'll definitely get an experience out of it unlike anything I'm guessing you've had before. It's cash only, so plan on $5 to get in, and $5 per beer (assuming you want something nice on tap - you can get cheap cans for $1). And if you get hungry, Bittles with the Vittles sets up his grill outside - it's a dirt cheap soul food smorgasboard, and it'll run ya about $7 for an overflowing plate.

But, um, don't let me steer y'all away from something else or anything. :)

I'm definitely interested in doing the Stooges Brass Band thing Thursday night, though there had also been an earlier mention in the the game of Kermit Ruffins as a possibility for same night.

Worked the late shift last night and still had some last minute packing to do. Didn't get a proper night's sleep so it's likely I'm be dragging some when we arrive today. But here we come! Looking at some of the second line information these past few days made me realize that there's at least some similarity with the annual Philadelphia Mummers tradition. And if there's something two former South Philly kids are going to have in their pulse, no matter how removed we became from our roots, it's a certain saunter and strut.

Howsabout killing two birds with one stone - Stooges on Thursday, and then Kermit is playing the Rock and Bowl Saturday night. :)

Hmmm... I don't think the Bingo Show has any dates scheduled for this weekend. ;)

We went on an airboat tour this morning - excellent stuff, still picking the flies from between our teeth.

Four years ago, Denise and i were very sad to part company at the end of the NOLA jolly up.
Yesterday we got to reunite, with a great big cling-to-each-other hug that mirrored that one.
Poolside beverage, catching up, Joe meeting his first BCBers.
We went easy for the evening, seeking out a venue from the previous trip. Recalling that Mulates had live zydeco, and we were hungry, we sauntered over there. It was rather enjoyable. Been finding versions of Abita that I do like. Didn't make it a late night, but we did close the place down.

Earlier, when Joe and I arrived, our shuttle driver suggested we pace ourselves. We did. In a fashion. I dragged him to Central Market for muffuleta experiencing. Now, where Joe and I grew up there's an area called the Italian Market. Those of us local to the area called it 9th Street. We both lived right off 9th Street but different areas. It was full of shops like Central Market. So Joe's response when I drag him in a place that smells like our childhood home? "We passed all this New Orleans food so you could take me to 9th Street?"
But it was good. And then we had a little something in our stomachs so we could get drinks.
Stopped at Marie Leveau's. Shared with them that their Love Potion No 9 was powerfully effective stuff. "It is if you work the magic" was the response. Mm hmm.
Joe asked for a drink recommendation and we were directed to adjacent Fritzel's.
When we left Fritzel's, after having the absenthe experience, I did find the neon lights that were starting to go on especially vibrant. Maybe it was the contrast to the rainy sky. Maybe it was the booze. We continued on, grabbing another To Go Hurricane along the way.

Day one:

Big highlights: Fritzels and my second absinthe ever. Got to jawbone with some feller about the nomadic life of boilermakers. Got to stroll Bourbon St with lady Sambient.

And I got to meet real, in the flesh BCBers! We quickly found some common ground (Red) and the evening was great as the doyens dicussed board lore and schooled me in the dimly remembered past. A wonderful first evening!

For the Hi-Ho... I'm hoping to get to the hotel around 9:15 or so, after I get the little one put to bed and send the in-laws back to their hotel. I can fit seven, including me (though the two in the back might be a bit cramped), which I think should be good for the crowd?

There should be food at the Hi Ho, but keep in mind that it's barbecue/soul food (just a dude who parks his big ol' bbq grill outside), so even the veggies will have meat. There might also be a taco truck nearby, but don't count on it. I'd recommend y'all should get dinner first, and then keep this in mind as a sobering up/late night snack type thing.

If we can get out early enough, maybe we'll swing by the very weird and divey Saturn Bar first, which is just down the street.
