Anyway, I'm quite happy to be a Brit. The countryside is beautiful and varied, politically, we're relatively stable ( even though we have a bunch of ultra posh boys in charge at the mo) and I like tea and queuing and toasted teacakes and the moderate climate.

Plus, to echo what Nick said, we're pretty lucky to have avoided being invaded for the last few hundred years. Having been to a few of the central and eastern European countries by now, and learning something of the hardship and terrors visited upon them, I'm glad as fuck that my ancestors didn't have to go through all that stuff. Granted, some of them had to live in Stoke, but that's *probably* an acceptable fate by comparison...

I've certainly considered emigrating, to either Australia or Thailand, but when all is said and done I think the UK suits me pretty well. I must be pretty boring, but I like the familiarity. Probably just getting old.

It's the natural course of events. 2/3's of my high school graduating class still lives in town or within a 10-mile radius. I'd probably be among them if my parents hadn't moved when I was in college (I graduated dead broke and moved home for a while).

'Great' is overstating things, I feel. Sure you can a case for this island being relatively stable and lacking in major conflicts, and for having a moderate climate. But, to be honest, I find the place to be rather draining. I hate the fact that Britons have no sense of civic pride, as I trudge through litter-strewn streets and badly-designed buildings made by architects who just didn't care. Our culture is smug and self-satisfied; mostly it's very second-rate. For example, when I see brilliant foreign TV shows like The Wire of Forbrydelsen I have a real sadness that shows of such scope are probably impossible in the current British culture, which has basically drowned in nostalgia.

This summer, I'm going to feel deeply isolated in England, as I hate the Olympics and despise the monarchy. I really ought to emigrate. Maybe I should sign up for Swedish language classes and then make the move.
