Why is it a novelty song? It's consistent musically with the rest of the album.

OK it is a novelty album.

And the idea was nicked anyway.

It is in no way a novelty album, it's fucking serious, heart-felt stuff - knocked this 13 yr old's block off.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Nope, I just found the whole thing a bit of a let down after their first run of singles and Peel sessions etc.

It seemed like a cynical grab for mainstream acceptance. although with Rowland at the helm I doubt it was in retrospect.

I just disliked the whole schtick I am afraid, I'm with the Yanks on this one.

Too Rae up your fucking clunge, fiddle de dee nonsense, I have always had a very low level of acceptance for Irish fiddling in pop music

The songwriting retained its mark from the first album. It was just basically fiddles replacing horns in the arrangements. I don't think the change was as radical as you're suggesting -which is why most of their fans liked the second album as much as the first.

Dexy's are my lifeblood, was too young first time round but lucky enough to see them on the last tour in a very small venue which was very special. Can't remember who said it but they remarked if Otis had sang this it would be considered a soul standard.

If he was from Venus would he feed us with a spoon? If he was from mars wouldn't that be cool?

It came off the back of several top 40 singles (including a number 1). Isn't that mainstream acceptance enough?

Mind you, in the modern Popworld of 1982/3 nothing pleaded "buy me" like a bunch of Brummies dressed in dungarees and brandishing tin whistles.

His pneumatic cartoonish voice was consistent with other 80s vocalists: fatBob(Cure), KBush, etc.,
which comes across more as caricature, and which may undermine serious artistic intent. Which Kate handily overcame, but the others...
It's kinda depressing for a music forum to be proud of not knowing musicians.

Plan B - 58
Show Me - 16
Liars A to E - didnt chart
Celtic Soul Brothers - 45

but i agree with your general point. ;)

Anyone watching?

I'm impressed by this soul revue thing. It really works - all the corny, showy stuff. Good man Rowland.

I cannot help but like the man. The new stuff took awhile to sink in , it works on the stage though John.

I'm watching. Excellent stuff. Theatrical without being over the top. It helps that I really like the last Dexys album One Day I'm Going to Soar.

Kevin Rowland comes across very well in the interviews also. Determined to do things his way and follow his vision of the type of show that he would want to see. "I didn't want to come back after all this time and fuck it up"

Fabulous band. Own and love everything they've done, although some albums were immediate, others growers. One complaint, and I hope I don't wish to sound like a parent from the 60's ....I can't understand a word Kevin is singing. Articulate, dear boy, articulate. You obviously spent a lot of time and effort on the lyrics, but, unless you read them, you haven't got a clue what he's on about ....or do I need my ears syringed again?

Kevin's a national treasure. I understand his voice can be a deal breaker, but it's obvious from his passion for what he is trying to do, is genuine. If he was a novelty act he would have been touring as Dexys Midnight Runnerslsying all the hits, dressed in ripped jeans and not turning down prime time TV spots if they sing Eileen.

Actually scrub the above, I think their finest moment was Plan B. That might be one of my favourite songs by anyone. The moment when the song starts proper with that ghostly hammond and the great line "you've always been searching for something.." and then BAM!
There is an earlier, rawer version of it that's more horn lead, but I can only find the below version on youtube. Still magnificent though..
