The mp3 collection (compiled by eelpie I think) goes right up 2001's Curse of the Hidden Mirror. Any opinions on that or Heaven Fobid from 1998. Return to form or misguided comeback?

Just listening to the title track of Fire of Unknown Origin and I reckon the original that comes as a bonus track on Agents of Fortune is a better version.

They were an early favorite of mine as a kid and I stayed right with them until Club Ninja - which I own and have never made it through. I like a bit more of Revolution By Night (but again it's been years since I listened to it).

I got to see them twice - past their prime both times. The first show was somewhere around 88 or 89. They were playing a small bar in the Poconos (Flagstaff if I recall) - about a two hour or so drive from me. I heard something on the radio about it that afternoon and talked a friend into taking the drive up to see them. Played to about 50 or 60 people. Fantastic set list and they were just on fire. A great show, great memory but a horrible drive home. Saw them a couple years later in Philly and it seemed phoned in compared to that other show.

Still love most of their catalog. Never had many (any) friends really into them. Openly mocked mostly.

In considering how the first three studio LPs are the best, I'm thinking one could combine Agents and Spectres for an album which might be the equal of any of them. Try this:

Side One
This Ain't the Summer of Love
Don't Fear the Reaper
ETI
The Revenge of Vera Gemini
Tattoo Vampire

Side Two
Godzilla
RU Ready to Rock
I Love the Night
Nosferatu

I guess you could throw "Golden Age of Leather" on side two but I've never been crazy about that song.

Side one of that is about the best 18 minutes of rock music every put on vinyl

Career of Evil, Subhuman, Dominance and Submission and Me262

I can't think of a better side of a rock album, possibly Led Zep IV side 1, but it is in that sort of of company

Digging the proggish Astronomy. That's gotta be the Patti Smith number, no?

Don't think so

It is a Sandy Pearlman lyric, it is an Imaginos song

The Bouchards wrote the music.

"Astronomy" is ace. One of their best numbers.

Smith only wrote Career Of Evil on Secret Treaties I think.
I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

Nah, she co-wrote "Baby Ice Dog," "The Revenge of Vera Gemini," "Debbie Denise," & "Shooting Shark." Also, "In Thee" is about her.

Indeed, I could have phrased it better... Of all the songs on Secret Treaties, only Career Of Evil is written by Smith.

I think she only did the lyrics to that tune.

I had that comp for years. Decent selection of songs but sub-par sound.

You should have stopped there.

I have never been a BOC guy. My friend Karl (you know.....Karl) pointed me towards Secret Treaties and Tyranny and as a fan of the hard rock, I'm still baffled. It sounds like Alice Cooper if Zappa wrote their songs. Are they, like, the real Spinal Tap or something? I do dig "Astronomy" (via Metallica) but there is something rhythmically off about this band. The drummer plays so tight and clean, seemingly rushing through everything, that the band sounds constipated and really, really rigid. It's like Love It To Death-era Alice Cooper before they got a little swing to their sound - that scared 'drummer-on-a-click-track' sound, but the BOC drummer clearly is not on a click track. It doesn't help that their albums sound so tinny. I readily admit that there are some killer riffs, but that hyper-constipated boogie-woogie shit like "The Red & the Black" just doesn't cut it. It's kind of like asking studio musicians to play punk rock. No rough edges and slightly cartoonish. They also seem to lift quite a bit from Alice Cooper. (Did I remember to mention Alice Cooper?)

I dunno. I don't get it. I thought "Godzilla" was tough when I was a kid, but now it's just laughable. "Don't Fear the Reaper", however, is aces.

Well, that's one man's opinion.

And I never heard the Alice Cooper comparisons before.

Not just comparisons - outright lifts. I was singing the end part of "Ballad of Dwight Fry" (See my lonely life unfold/ I see it everyday /See my lonely mind explode /When I've gone insane over the chorus of "Flaming Telepaths". It's not a bad thing, but this is not an isolated instance.

So you're saying the songs utilized the same chords, and vocal line?

I'll have to go listen again. But what are the other lifts?
