A is perfectly lovely, in a typically Chieftains kinda way. I can think of many tracks that would stand out more.
B is something special; a true one-off.

The Chieftains - a bunch of fine musicians as demonstrated here
Typical Chieftains - delightful
I am not familiar with Mark Fry
To me, it sounded like a cross between Tyrannosaurus Rex and The Incredible String Band which isn't a bad thing.
I enjoyed the freak-out bit in the middle - it reminded me of a Quintessence concert!
A tough call but
B has it
Yes, B has it

Good to see two great picks for the opening match of the final. I saw the Chieftains live in Melbourne about 25 years ago and they were a terrific live act but have never ventured to seek out their albums but always enjoy tracks whenever I hear them and this is no exception. A good infectious track. Incidentally they were supported by Sarah McLachlan who remains the single most boring act I've ever seen live. Thank God the Chieftains were ace.
B has cropped up once or twice in cups before and I love it, a real obscure gem.
A real tough tie this but B gets it.

Hmm, A's walking that tightrope between infectious and diddly-diddly pastiche. But I think it's on the right side of the tightrope, if I'm allowed to completely ruin my own metaphor. Clearly a children's skipping song or something, but it's done with a feeling of genuine joy.
Every time I see that Mark Fry clip, I say I need to check out the full album, and I never do. I guess it just isn't at the top end of the rediscovered folk obscurity treasure chest, but it's quite good all the same. You have to say that the youtuber chose a brilliant clip to accompany the music, it couldn't be more apt and eerie.
Not the most original pick, but it still wins here. Sorry, A.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

A is nice, one of the better Irish folk choices so far for me. But it's beaten by B which is more my kind of thing.

Re: Folk Cup 2019 Final Match 1
Slowly came around to Mark Fry - taken me a few days of playing each track, though as an owner of the Chieftain's album I am familiar with their song. I actually prefer some of the more countrified songs on that album & would have picked a different Chieftain's track. Great, great band, so almost reluctantly,

I always enjoy the Chieftains, but have a sneaking suspicion that the whole is not as good as the parts if you know what I mean - superb musicianship from people steeped in the culture, often exceptional, but seldom truly great.
Fry is new to me, but I really enjoyed this and will explore further.
