Shirley Collins has a great voice backed by The Albions with virtuosos including Ashley Hutchings, Richard Thompson and Barry Dransfield on fiddle

Taken from No Roses I think.

Awesome and full of music.

Tia Blake is completely new to me - I've never heard of her

But wow! What a voice and that acoustic intro reminded me of Nick Drake.

Some lovely harmonies and a little bit of cello in there too.

Really good - a discovery for me!!

The trouble is, do I go for my default position and go Shirley and the gang or a ''new to C' artist/track..?

I need to play them both again.

Tia is infectious and sounds even better on second listening

So, A has it

A has it

A was completely new to me and was a bit of a gem. Lovely guitar and vocal.

B was a good sprawling murder ballad in a tried and tested folk fashion. The very distinct sections help break it up and prevent it becoming too monotonous.

Two more good picks and yet another tough choice but I'll take A

A tough one, and I deliberated for quite a while. A is a wonderful discovery (I feel like it came up here before previously in fact and I said so then but I may have it confused with something else) but I think that's as much due to her being an interesting character as the music itself, which is cool but not that unusual.

B probably gives me more pleasure ultimately, and though she's the much better-known singer here, it's not as if her voice has any less character. And it's such a great arrangement that stands out even during the peak of Britfolkrock.

Just not getting the love for A. Pleasant eough but to my ears sounds just like anyone walking into a bedsit and giving everyone a song. B has quality all over it.

A has a lovely narcoleptic feel about it but Shirley is pure class. This is how you do a murder ballad.

Good work, A, digging out something completely new to me, and quite interesting. I don't really like the harmonising on the chorus, but the verses are lovely delicate flights. There's a proper atmosphere here, like hatz says, it's not that unusual, but it's performed and arranged with smoky delicateness that really appeals. I hope the rest of her output is of a similar level, because I think I can see myself investing in some of this.

Shirley Collins, by God that woman can sing, her voice is literally the sound of pastoral England, ancient and pure. Unfortunately, Richard Thompson's here again with his shitty over-fussy guitar playing, and she should've told her husband where to stick that bloody electric bass. Lovely hurdy-gurdy section, it's a pity the Fairport Conventionals were present at all. If this was just Shirley and hurdy-gurdy, it would've won the round, even given the quality of A.

Much as I love the Albion Band I found their backing a little too fussy, Tia Blake's accompaniment was much more complimentary.

Thankfully her album is on Youtube, shall be giving it a listen.

a - nice picking. Like DF, I could do without the harmonizing on the chorus, but she does a great job of marrying character with delicacy. Reminded me a bit of Linda Perhacs, which is a good thing in Raygeworld.
b- Shirley Collins's voice is the sort of thing I admire rather than enjoy, and I find the busy backing a less than ideal setting for it.. Intrigued to hear Mr Dransfield here. He used to go out with Chip's friend Jill, and was a bit of a shit by their accounts. Chip referred to him as a back-street prima donna, a soubriquet he apparently took to heart. Anyway, I'm halfway through this and I can see it's not going to win over A...

Oh, i missed this one.

Good match. B was an interesting song, both in form and content, and quite appealing in a folk rock way. The band sound on top of their game. But A grabbed me very quickly with its gentle charms and is a fine discovery to boot.
