A has achieved the trifecta - Not a folk artist, doing just about the worst version of a song that's been done a few thousand times. Are they serious? Really?

B is a bit overly slick, and I'd prefer anything from the sadly forgotten debut to it, but it's still a strong performance and at least it's not living in Mitch Miller-land.

Absolutely no contest the Home Service album is a CC - top-notch and top hole.

I adore the album and this is a fine track.

John Tams is a master wordsmith.

Trini Lopez is my worst nightmare I recall my parents having an album from which is awful track comes [circa 1963]

Really not my cup of tea - almost as grating as the crooners

Easy (LET'S ROCK!) B has it

B has it

A: Lounge shit, not folk
B: Not A, and that's good enough.

Good job I don't have a hammer right now, because this is a bloody expensive laptop. Trini Lopez. Googa, what were you thinking?

Blimey, B's intro is trying to rival A for naffness. It's The Final Countdown at 16rpm. Oh my God, this is wretched, a horrible bloated soft rock monster. Literally every single moment of this is cliched and banal, and has no place not just in this cup, but has no place in a world where there is any shred of decency.

A
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I'm not getting a lot of joy from this tie, i'm afraid. Sorry, pickers.

'If I had a hammer' was written by Pete Seeger, so damn right its a folk song. However Trini Lopez is no Pete Seeger, nd this version is a total abortion. People on here claiming to like it really should check in their music fan membership on the way out.

The Home Service on the other hand are underrated compared with there contemporaries, somewhat unfairly because a) Its John Tams, and b) (as C mentions above) he is a masterful wordsmith. This song is about Thatcher BTW.

A - yes its a folk song doesn't make this version good. Might be the worse song of the contest.

B-long and drawn out. This song isn't that much better than A.

I've never liked John Tams much, so I almost voted for Googa

But this gets quite good in the second half.

B, but just.
