Robert Pete Williams - a nice bit of blues (which of course is 'folk')

Very nice.

Up against the great Martin Carthy - a great track from a great album.

I adore his voice and like Robert Pete Williams Carthy is a mean guitar picker.

A corker of a match.

Very close to call.

I love this track - a really strong selection from the said platter

Close, but B has it

B has it

Damn it.

I'm happy to see blues here and always want to vote for it when it appears, and to make matters worse, A is a particularly good selection.

B is so great on so many levels, though. Carthy's first original song, which is kind of amazing, but he obviously waited till he had something good. And it's later in his career, but it's also him performing at a high level and showing that there's something he does that is absolutely like no one else. The entire folk world has had 50 years now, should they want to copy what he does. No one has managed it.

I want to vote for A, but just can't.

A: Robert Pete Williams absolutely destroyed me the first time I heard him. There's still nothing quite like him. A master of space and time.
B: Well now... interesting. New to me but more of less the reason I'm participating in the cup. There's a story in there which I always like and he lets his box breathe. Well done.

B
You read that in a book, didn't you?!

RPW Is new to me. But my lack of love for blues is a killer here, I just don't find it a varied enough sound in the long run, it all kinda blurs into one thing for me.

Can I vote for Carthy's passage? I'm not sure. This doesn't feel like an original composition, more a bunch of bits of things he's heard before stitched together. Very ersatz, very plastic sounding, clumsy and cheap.

Abstain.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Wow, A is really good. The vivacious play certainly defying the almost dead-part of this track.
B is equally as lovely. Superb lyric too.
Just because it was new to me...

Either song would have won easily against most of the other songs in this round's early matches.

Robert Pete Williams, whose songs came from the sky has it tonight.

Good tie and a shame to vote against A but make room for one more aboard the Hatz/Corp Whore bandwagon.

A is a blues song but I liked it enough, not really a fan of the blues except in small doses. Nice picking.

B- nice traditional folk. The lyrics and guitar make this an easy win.

This is extremely hard - both really ace!

Ultimately, it's idiosyncratic blues against the daddy of British folk singing an original song with lyrics that really slay me, and this is the folk cup, so B

Yes, I voted against myself. Not that it would have mattered.

Most losses here piss me off. I tip my hat on this one. Or however one acknowledges a fish. Great track. Dammit.
