Planxty - at last!

What a great band and what a great song.

The uilleann pipes, half-way through, lift this joyful track to almost a heavenly level.

Beautiful

Christy looks so cool.

Stunning.

A good call.

Fred Gillen Jr I have never heard of.

Clearly American and not British due to being 'Jr' as opposed to 'Jnr'

I really enjoyed it - full of life and vigour.

Nicely sung and well played with nice solid tubs.

Sufficiently robust but,

A has it

Yes, A has it

I'd rather A had picked another song other than the "Johnny B. Goode" of folk music, but there's still no denying Planxty's incredible and lasting genius.

B sound like pretty ordinary Americana to me - not a genre I favor, and without anything unique I can discern about it either.

A: I'm coming to enjoy this type of sound, chalking it up to my double helix thingy
B: Ick. Whiny shite.

It's trad again, but those duelling mandolins are intricate and most pleasant to mine ears. Good folk music of this sort always sounds better live, doesn't it? It just sounds wrong in a studio with proper separation of instruments and all that, which a few tracks have suffered from in this cup. Could look less bored when playing the pipes though.

Americana, leccy bass, hackneyed vocal. Not for me, this one, not for me. Got a bit of the Bon Jovi ballad about it.

I pretty much detest both of these.

I wish I could get my teeth more in B as the surround sounds are quite good but the song at the heart of it doesn't do it justice.
A is a classic for sure. Hate that the choice is do easy.

B is may be more my thing, i guess. I generally have a low tolerance for Irish-style trad. music, and i'm afraid that the consistent picking of this style has started to negatively affect my voting. Apolgies, pickers.

Tired of the Fred Gillen Jr sound fairly quickly, while Planxty are Planxty - though agree with Mr Hatz' view that this is an obvious and rather over performed song.

Planxty, yes - but why this one? Its so predictable (although at least the Steeleye Span trap has been avoided!). The playing is excellent though, as you would expect. The instrumental break is a thing of great beauty.
B - I quite warmed to this actually. Not a record I would buy, but I would be happy to hear this in a live setting.

So B is a nice effort that does not deserve the beating it is receiving, but unfortunately

Is Planxty

A- nice irish folk but gets boring after awhile as same tone and same drool vocal tone. The dueling mandolins and pipes are a nice touch.

B- enjoyed the Fred Gillen tune. Nice Americana folk. nice vocals and guitar.

Planxty were always a bit too "folk club" for me but I can appreciate the honesty there. B sounds like college rock kids who've just bought their first guitars.

It is unfortunate for B, who is a great songsmith I'd never ever heard before.

But he doesn't stand a chance against the mighty Planxty in all their glory!
